Dear Editor,
With the upcoming holiday it is important to remember the reason for celebrating this holiday. Formerly known as Independence Day, July 4 is one of the most important holidays we celebrate. It isn't about who can shoot the most fireworks, going to the lake, or having a picnic. It is about our freedom dating back to when the 13 colonies fought to gain independence and establish the great country we have today. The sacrifices made by our servicemen and women have made to maintain this freedom have been great. Starting with the War of the Revolution in 1775 to the present war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Being Patriotic isn't just for holidays. Patriotism should be practiced everyday. Fly the Flag, help a neighbor or friend in time of need, visit a rest home. There are many ways to be Patriotic. Above all when the Pledge of Allegiance is being said or the National Anthem is being played be sure to remove your hat and put your hand over your heart and remind people around you to do the same. And hang up the cell phone. A couple of minutes to show respect to our Flag and country shouldn't be too much to ask.
On this holiday weekend pause from your busy schedule and give thanks for the freedom we have, And remember freedom isn't free. God bless America.
