Dear Editor,
We are here representing the 6814 persons that use HCBS/DD (Home & Community Based Services / Developmentally Disabled) and the 5783 persons that use HCBS/PD (Home & Community Based Services / Physically Disabled) and the 5783 persons that use HCBS/FE (Home & Community Based Services / Frail & Elderly).
We need $6.1 million for HCB services to ensure that none of our brothers and sisters goes onto a waiting list.
Through the HCBS program, we have the opportunity to live as other Kansans choosing to live in our own homes and being independent. For some of us it means having the opportunity to be on a job and pay taxes as other Kansans. For Kansas, it means spending 1/3 the amount of an institution.
For some Kansans, there is the need for assistive technology to be free and independent. Last year that program provided services to 4,537 Kansans. This program aids in the prevention of institutional care.
The Assistive Technology Program needs $375,000 to replace federal money that will no longer be available.
It is in your hands as to whether we treat people as pawns in a game or see them as Kansans who need essential services from YOU.
You can count us in.
Approximately 70 activists from SE Kansas (with more on the way) are now in the halls of the State Capitol delivering this message.
