PITTSBURG —

Dear Editor,
Tuesday evening, I biked with my daughter to her gymnastics practice at the YMCA.  She was having difficulty with her gears, so after we arrived, I spent some time repairing the bike.   An hour after returning home, I suddenly realized that in the process of fixing her bike, I had forgotten to lock it to the bike rack.  I rushed back to the YMCA, but it was too late.  Someone had already stolen her bike.
This incident alone is bad enough, but it is the third time in eight months that our daughter's personal property has been damaged/stolen: The first, a smashed bicycle helmet at her bus stop; the second, her eyeglasses snapped in half in her locker during her birthday party at the Y swimming pool; and now this.  To add insult to injury, the bike had been given to her by some dear friends only days before.  My trust in the community at large (and I'm sure, my daughter's trust as well) is about nil right now.
Please, parents, please teach your children respect for others and their property.  Not everyone has unlimited resources to go and replace damaged or stolen property.  But more importantly, if we don't teach our children to look out for one another, how can they expect someone else to look out for their interests?  I would also ask that if anyone saw a powder-blue girls Mt. Fury bicycle leaving the Y on Tuesday evening between 6:15 and 7:15 or if someone notices a friend or child suddenly in possession of a “new” bicycle of this description that they contact me (235-0412) or the Pittsburg Police Department.
Sincerely,
Anna Noonoo
