Thumbs up... to the annual community Thanksgiving dinner at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pittsburg. The event continues to grow, and more than 850 meals were either served or delivered this year.
Thumbs down... to news that an application from Ozark Trail Gaming LLC for a proposed casino one mile north of Interstate 44 at U.S. Highway 166/400 was rejected by the Kansas Lottery Tuesday.
Thumbs up... to news that construction will begin this spring on a medical and dental services clinic to be located on the campus of the Life Center in Riverton. The $1 million facility will boast 4,200 square feet and feature seven medical examination rooms and seven dental operatories.
Thumbs up... to the Pittsburg Fire Department. For yet another year, the fire department supplied Crisis Resource Center/Safehouse with the fixings for its Thanksgiving meal.
Thumbs up... to Pittsburg High School graduate Kerry Meier and current KU wide receiver, for being named to the All-Big 12 Academic Team.
Thumbs up... to news that construction on the new Girard Sports Complex could be ready for play by early January, according to City Administrator Gary Emry.
Thumbs up... to SEK-CAP, for giving Girard Medical Center a grant to fund the Dine-O-Might program in 2010. Dine-O-Might is a health and wellness program started by GMC for Girard fourth graders at R.V. Haderlein Elementary School six years ago, and the program was expanded to Frontenac’s Frank Layden Elementary earlier this year.
Thumbs up... to Northeast Elementary School students, for collecting 2,000 items for the needy during a recent food drive.
