Over a year ago in the heat of the 2008 presidential race, we asked how much progress has actually been made in the field of gender equality in politics.
While it may not be as strong as we would like, we are proud to be ahead of the curve here in southeast Kansas.
U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan., was the guest of honor Friday at the Pittsburg State University Alumni Center to celebrate Women in Government, and there was a lot to celebrate. We are fortunate to have strong female leadership in the Crawford County Commission with Linda Grilz, local city commissions and councils with Marty Beezley, Pam Henderson, Sharon Mattson and Susan Thom, the state House of Representatives with Julie Menghini and the U.S. House with Jenkins. We believe it is a testament to the community that we have not fallen for the prejudices that have plagued much of our politics in other parts of the nation.
We are proud of our community for setting a shining example for others to follow, and applaud these women for the contributions they have made to our government.
