It looks like Pittsburg may be getting a national championship game after all.
The Citizens Bank Bowl committee this week selected National Junior College Athletic Association No. 1 Fort Scott Community College and No. 2 Blinn College to play in the inaugural bowl Sunday, Dec. 6 at Carnie Smith Stadium.
Neighboring FSCC boasts the nation’s longest winning streak at 12 games, dating back to 2008, while Blinn will enter the game with the nation’s No. 1-ranked offense, averaging 492 yards per game. To make the match-up even more enticing, Blinn is coached by Pittsburg native son Brad Franchione.
We are pleased with the bowl committee’s selection and are anxious for what promises to be an exciting match-up between two high-quality programs. Hosting a potential national title game is a feather in our community’s cap, and will hopefully provide a sizable economic impact.
With the placement of this game being on a Sunday, we would like to invite area businesses to keep their doors open to new clientele who will visit our community from neighboring Fort Scott, as well as those traveling from Texas. We realize that some local businesses would typically be closed, but this brings about an excellent opportunity for new business that can continue beyond the game weekend. We believe that our area businesses should take full advantage of that potential.
This is the perfect opportunity to showcase, not only our great athletic facility at Carnie Smith Stadium, but also our community in general. This is a great time for us to show both teams and their fans what hospitality is all about.
We encourage everyone to come out to the stadium to show support for the community and enjoy what is sure to be a high-powered gridiron match-up.
