Three games into the high school season for each team, the Pittsburg boys, the Pittsburg girls, the St. Mary’s Colgan boys and the Colgan girls have not lost a single varsity game between them, a perfect 12-0 combined early in the 2012-2013 season.

The Colgan girls moved to 3-0 with a 39-25 win over McDonald County on Tuesday night. The Panthers led 17-13 at halftime and pulled away for the win after halftime with a 22-12 advantage.

Junior forward Sydney Beck provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and Taylor Bolinger had nine, Nichole Kolarik and Katie Kolarik, Mariah Klenke and Aliee Story each added four points for the Panther attack.

The Colgan boys remained undefeated with a 61-42 win over the Mustangs.

Colgan plays its second consecutive Missouri opponent on the road Friday night against Carl Junction.

COMMERCE, Okla. — The Southeast Lancers traveled across state lines and swept Commerce on Tuesday night.
Both games were marked by the guests taking an early lead and holding on tight for a narrow-margin victory.
The Lancer girls won 38-33 and the Lancer boys won 41-39.

In the girls contest, Olivia Powell led Southeast with 13 points and Tessa Robin added nine, Rylie Dainty eight, Amy Martin four and Rachel Bole two.

In the boys game, Southeast put together its best first quarter of the year and skunked Commerce 14-0. The Lancers entered the fourth ahead 35-25 but that 10-point lead was down to only three with 20 seconds remaining and Commerce having possession of the ball. In other words, Southeast hung on.

Southeast won the abbreviated two-quarter JV girls contest 21-9 behind six points from Samantha Garrett and four points apiece from Madison Bone and Katelyn Bitner.

The girls improve to 4-1 and the boys to 2-3. Both teams close out the December portion of their schedule Tuesday against St. Paul.

Coffeyville boys 72, Labette County 69
ALTAMONT — In an eagerly-anticipated Southeast Kansas League opener, the Golden Tornado blew into Altamont with a 26-point first quarter and held on for a three-point win in a matchup of teams picked to finish as the SEK’s best.
Coffeyville was propelled in that first quarter by Darren Lewis and James Newton, who combined for 21 points (Lewis 11, Newton 10).

Lewis scored a game-high 26 on the strength of five 3-point shots and Newton picked up 22. Lewis also scored 13 in the fourth, beginning and finishing the game with his best offensive play.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were led by 25 points from Dontae Johnson and 12 from Chase Dodsworth. Labette County battled its way back from a 13-point deficit after one quarter with a 19-4 advantage in made free throws.
