Pittsburg head tennis coach John Seal expressed disappointment Thursday night and two days later, he expressed joy in the performance of the girls squad in the Jaguar Invitational (Mill Valley).

Seal explained that Pittsburg won only a single medal in their four previous years playing this event and on Saturday, Pittsburg brought home a team medal and three individual medals — a first, a second and a third. Pittsburg finished third behind host Mill Valley and overall winner Blue Valley.

No. 1 singles player Katy Short faced a formidable challenge during her first-round match. She played three-time state qualifier and Mill Valley’s ace singles player, Sarah Wetzel . . . Short beat Wetzel 8-7 and Wetzel ended up fourth. Seal called this win “huge for us.”

Short won her next two matches against KC Sumner and Spring Hill before falling 8-1 in the championship match to Morgan Steffes of Blue Valley, a fellow sophomore player who finished her freshman season Eastern Kansas League singles champion and third place at state.

Brittany Wilde, whom Seal says keeps getting better, dropped her opening match and her third-place match to finish in fourth.

Jessica Curlee-Laikyn Long placed third in No. 1 doubles, playing what Seal called their best tennis of the year. Curlee-Long scored Pittsburg a point.

Katie Phalen-Emily Baden won No. 2 singles, defeating Mill Valley 8-6, Spring Hill 8-1, KC Sumner 8-0 and Lansing 8-5. Seal said Phalen-Baden played “fantastic” Saturday.

Team results: Blue Valley 21, Mill Valley 19, Pittsburg 17, Lansing 14, Maranatha Academy 9, Spring Hill 5, Bonner Springs 1, KC Sumner 1.

Frontenac took second in the Erie Tournament on Saturday, losing both its matches on the day to Class 4A No. 3-ranked Chanute, a team which Frontenac head coach Cassie Buche said outpowered the Raiders.

However, Frontenac enjoyed a little revenge against Southeast and Erie, teams which swept Frontenac on its home floor during a recent Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League triangular.

“Overall, we had a great day,” Buche said. “Lindsey Gorham did a great job running our offense and our serving game was phenomenal today.”

In the first match of the day, Frontenac defeated Wichita West 2-0 (25-4, 25-17). Gorham had 14 assists, 22 service points, three aces and four digs. Ryleigh McCartney added five digs, eight kills and four blocks. Andi Palumbo had eight digs, six service points and three aces. Nayna Fields added five digs on the defensive end and offensively, Lauren Hipfl and Libby Warrick had four and three kills, respectively.
