In the third quarter, the Frontenac Raiders nearly doubled their score from the entire first half. At the same time, they limited Galena to just two points, turning a somewhat close game into a 50-20 rout.
The Raiders turned a 23-11 halftime lead into a 45-13 spread in the third quarter. The run was sparked mainly by Bailey Flora, who scored seven of her nine points in the quarter, and Jennifer Long, who scored five of her six points in the third.
“We needed that after the slow start in the first half,” said Frontenac girls head coach Jeremy Rakes. “We were taken in by some of the festivities more than the game. We came out, and we had a good discussion about it at halftime. The third quarter was the turning point of the game.”
Rakes referred to the “Red Out” for Women’s Heart Health Month, with a small ceremony at halftime.
But although the team got out to a slow start in the first half, there were a few bright spots, namely senior Meghan Winden.
Winden scored five of the team’s first six points. In the second quarter, Winden scored seven straight unanswered points for the Raiders — a three-pointer off an assist from Haley Wilson, a bucket after a block and outlet pass by Natalie Coomes, and a steal-and-score to cap off the run — to turn a five-point lead into a 12-point lead. Winden ended with 14 points.
“She came out ready to play,” Rakes said. “She did a nice job handling the ball, and defensively she was in the passing lanes. She had a number of steals on our full-court pressure.”
Helping on the glass on Tuesday was the unsung hero of Lindsey Gorham. While scoring just four points (all in the pivotal third quarter), Gorham also notched a game-high nine rebounds.
“I know every night, she will do the little things,” Rakes said. “She’s boxing out, rebounding, being one of our best post players. She brings overall leadership. She can be a turning point, and she can make a shot when you need it or get a rebound.”
Bailey Flora scored nine points for the Raiders, and Abby Shelton led the Bulldogs with six points.
The Raiders moved to 15-1 (3-0 CNC) on the season and will play Colgan on Friday in the Homecoming game.

The Galena Bulldogs only made three field goals in the second half. But thanks to a strong first half and clutch free throws, that ended up being enough to clinch a 52-46 road victory against Frontenac.

Galena 52, Raiders 46
The Galena Bulldogs only made three field goals in the second half. But thanks to a strong first half and clutch free throws, that ended up being enough to clinch a 52-46 road victory against Frontenac.
Things did not start off well for the Raiders, to say the least. Galena opened the game on a 10-2 run. After Frontenac ended that run, Galena followed it with a 12-2 run that made the score 22-6 early in the second quarter. That deficit would grow to 17 points by halftime.
All told, Galena hit 16 field goals in the first half and took a 34-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
“Galena’s a good team,” said Frontenac head coach Doug Barto. “They hit a lot of shots. That’s the name of the game. They hit a lot of shots in the first half. Their offense got them a lot of shots. We settled for a lot of runners. That’s not a high-percentage shot. Some of those have gone in in the past, not to say that’s why we lost or anything. We missed some shots we should have made.”
Although the first half was a disaster, the Raiders nearly rallied all the way back in the second half.
By the end of the third quarter, the Raiders had cut the lead to 40-32, largely behind Blake Barto’s eight points in the quarter. He would end with 16 points to lead all scorers.
“We fine-tuned some things at halftime and bottled it down on defense. The kids were doing a great job of adjusting,” Doug Barto said. “We had a couple of breakdowns. I like everything to go perfect. If it was all perfect, it wouldn’t be fun, though.”
The Raiders had their opportunities to possibly come away with a victory. Avery Coronado hit a three-pointer to narrow the lead to five early in the fourth quarter. Later, he hit another three to cut the Galena lead to 45-44 with 1:04 left in the game.
But fouls began to catch up for the Raiders. The Bulldogs would hit 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter, including seven of eight in the final minute to clinch the win against its conference foes. Chad Shepherd led the Bulldogs with 12 points.
Frontenac fell to 9-7 (1-2 CNC) with the loss and will play Friday at home against St. Mary’s Colgan.
