The Girard Trojans (3-1) dealt an upsetting 42-0 defeat to the Southeast Lancers (3-1) Friday night. The Lancers, who were celebrating their homecoming, were unable to get a strong offensive or defensive series going as senior running and defensive back Anthony Scholes plowed through Southeast with a remarkable 237 rushing yards.

The Lancers began their night with a failed onside-kick attempt to open the game leaving Girard in possession inside Lancer territory. From there, Scholes began a slow advance up the field, eventually scoring a 32-yard touchdown with 9:21 left in the first quarter.

Southeast answered with an immediate trick play and penalty only to end their first drive with senior Josh Thompson throwing an interception to none other than Scholes.
Girard quickly drove down the field and resulted in junior Brayden Johnson throwing a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Trenton Stolte at 5:38 left in the first quarter.

Things didn’t improve for Southeast, as Johnson was able to connect another scoring pass to Stolte and then rush for a 23-yard touchdown despite miscommunication between Johnson and his running backs during the scoring play at 6:52 in the second quarter. After a late interception thrown by Thompson, Girard was able to work its way back up the field between Scholes and junior Taylor Lewis; Scholes finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown with 2:06 to go in the first half. The Lancers seemed to gain some ground before halftime with a successful fourth-down conversion but they ran out of time and the half was over with the Trojans up 35-0.

The Lancers came into the second half with a long and strong drive; however after a series of dropped passes, Girard took over only to fumble their first play of the drive with Southeast recovering. After the recovery, Thompson continued to look to the sky but most passes fell incomplete. On fourth-and-13, Thompson completed a pass to senior Avi Sharma in the end zone but was ruled out-of-bounds by the officials.
Scholes dealed out his final 18-yard touchdown of the game with 4:06 remaining in the third quarter.

The Lancers fought back for the remainder of the game; however, the disciplined Trojans managed to keep them from scoring. The game ended with Girard letting the clock run down after a series of short runs.

“I told the kids out there that the gameplan we came up with was executed very well,” said Girard head coach Leon Miller. “It’s a team effort, our guys up front, and really all of our guys played very well tonight and I’m very proud.”

The Lancers, Southeast head coach Clint Rider feels, made the best of the situation they were in and even considers it a wake-up call.

“We played really well the first two weeks and slipped up a bit last week,” Rider said. “They got an early jump on us, but no one thought we’d be standing at 3-1 at this point in the season and there’s always room for improvement. This game will not affect our future performances.”

The Southeast Lancers head for Oswego next week in their first out-of-league game, while the Girard Trojans will be facing off with the St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers for Girard Homecoming.
