The Girard Trojan girls improved to 3-1 with a 65-38 win Monday night over the Parsons Vikings. These schools met in the Class 4A substate championship game last season for a berth in the state tournament; however, Parsons graduated a large senior class responsible for its success last year.

“We hurt them early with pressure,” Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. “We did good job in the third quarter of running our offense and getting good shots. Hitting 12 3-pointers does not happen too often in high school girls basketball but you have to take what a defense gives you and we have multiple players capable of knocking it down if left open. We also did a better job in the second half of boxing out and our post defense improved.”

Girard outscored Parsons in every quarter, including a 24-10 first quarter. The Vikings trailed 37-20 at halftime and Girard only built on that lead.

Two Girard players with last names starting in the ‘H’ section combined for 10 3-point shots between them, five apiece. Hadyn Herlocker parlayed her five 3s into a game-high 18 and Carly Heatherly scored all 15 on 3s. Jenna Schroeder provided a third double-digits scorer with 10 and she proved responsible for the other two 3s.

Girard continues the Labette County portion of its schedule Friday night with a clash against the Labette County Grizzlies in Altamont, the opening act of a girls-boys doubleheader pitting the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League against the Southeast Kansas League.
