Girard senior Anthony Scholes signed his letter of intent Friday afternoon to play football at Fort Scott Community College.

“I’ve always loved football and I know they’re good at getting kids to the next level after their two years,” Scholes said. “It’s just a great opportunity for me and it’s close to home. I know some of my friends who go there.”

Scholes played his sophomore year at quarterback, where he became the varsity starter, and upon injuring his throwing hand his junior year, Scholes made a full-time switch to running back and he became one of the premier running backs in the area his junior and senior years.

“He’s a physical runner,” Girard head coach Leon Miller said. “He’s got the ability to make moves in the open field and when he gets loose, he’s got the speed to take it the distance. For us, he was one of those kids who was the complete package. He’s a good up-the-middle runner but when he gets on the edge, he can do some good things. He’s a great receiver.

“I think he’ll do great (at FSCC). I think it will be a good place for him to develop as a player and see where it takes him.”

Scholes rushed for 1,203 yards and 16 touchdowns on 154 carries his junior year and through 10 games of his senior year, he rushed for 1,482 yards and 20 TDs on 196 carries. He rushed for over 200 yards twice his junior year and for over 200 yards three times his senior year. His career-best yardage game was 240 against Riverton and he scored six TDs against Osawatomie. There was a seven-game stretch his senior year where he ran for over 100 and a three-game stretch where he ran for over 200.

Girard went on a nine-game roll in 2012 and won their first Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League title since 1999 with victories over Riverton (24-6), Columbus (19-14), Southeast (42-0), St. Mary’s Colgan (29-0), Galena (41-12) and Frontenac (7-6). Over their six league games, the Trojans outscored their opponents 162-38.

“It was a great run,” Scholes said.

Over back-to-back weeks in September, Girard shut out high-powered offenses Southeast and Colgan. The Trojans defeated Colgan for the first time since 1999 and it was such a dominating win on Homecoming at Frank Jameson Field that it propelled Girard forward its next three games against Galena, Independence and Parsons.

The Trojans defeated Colgan for the first time since 1999 and it was such a dominating win on Homecoming at Frank Jameson Field that it propelled Girard forward its next three games against Galena, Independence and Parsons.

“It was perfect timing,” Scholes said. “Senior year, Homecoming, last one in front of the home crowd. It was just awesome. On top of that, we got to shut them out. We prided ourselves on our defense all year. We rode our defense. We just played together as a brotherhood and tried to stop everybody. We liked that up-in-your-face come-get-us. Some people doubted us but in the end, we showed people that we could do it. It was great for us all to come together and be able to be successful the way we were.”

Scholes tore his ACL in the final game of the regular season against Frontenac and he returned to the field for the state playoffs the next week. Girard won its first playoff game against Columbus before a loss to Chanute.

“(Saturday) will be three months since the surgery,” Scholes said. “I’m already sprinting. That’s a major . . . it was supposed to be a six-month rehab but it hasn’t been three months yet. I feel really blessed.”
