The Northeast boys defeated Bronaugh 72-65 on Friday.

The Northeast girls won their first game of the season for new head coach Scott Post with a 42-33 triumph over cross-state rival Bronaugh. The Vikings broke open a tied game after three quarters with 16 fourth-quarter points.

Kaylee Bogina led the Vikes with 17 points and fellow sophomore Jazmin Nunn finished with nine. Gretchen Mills and Jaycie Polhlopek added seven and six points, respectively.

Northeast (both 1-0) returns to action next week in the annual early December Marmaton Valley Tournament.

Wardogs sweep Baxter Springs
BAXTER SPRINGS — The Baxter Springs Lions opened their season playing an opponent from across state lines with a Saturday doubleheader against the Miami Wardogs.

Miami won the boys game 102-61 and the girls contest 51-38.

Baxter Springs began slowly in the girls contest, trailing 11-0 before closing out the first quarter with five unanswered. The Lions trailed 25-22 at halftime, as senior guard Nina Spence totaled 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second quarter.

However, Miami built its lead to 45-33 after three quarters — behind a 20-11 third stanza — and held on for the 13-point win.

Ashleigh Grimes finished with 11 points for the Baxter girls.

The boys contest was never in doubt, as Miami led 27-13 after one, 62-33 at halftime and 84-44 after three en route to its 41-point win.

Derrick Barnes led Baxter with 16 points and three players chimed in with nine apiece — Craig Karnes, Nick Abernathy and Cody Rowe.

Chris Osborn paced the Wardogs with 19 points and Garrett Castor had 13, Braden Walker 12, Ben Osborn 10 and Wyatt Rathjen 10.

Junior high/middle school basketball
The Pittsburg Community Middle School seventh grade girls ended a losing streak with a 34-16 win Thursday night over Coffeyville.

Madison Vogel led the way with 11 points and eight rebounds, Abbie Casper played a solid floor game with four points, four assists, five steals and seven rebounds, Kyia McWilliams had six points and McKenzie Wilks added four. Pittsburg improves to 7-4.

The 7B team lost 15-10, despite six points by Isabel Hendrickson. PCMS lost the 8B game 30-9.
On Tuesday night, the key statistic in the eighth grade girls improving to 10-0 this season was not Logan Lord’s 14 points or Taylor Muff’s five assists or Daeshia Turner’s four assists or Jayden Hammond’s nine rebounds. All game highs, sure, and all important statistics, definitely, but the No. 1 stat was drawing six charges during a 32-16 win over Chanute.

The 7A girls dropped their fourth consecutive tight one, 20-19. Vogel had eight points, two assists and five steals. Kyia McWilliams and Abbie Casper each scored four points and Katie Arnold led with seven rebounds. Casper and McKenzie Wilks each added six rebounds. PCMS won both B games by two-point margins, 7B 24-22 and 8B 12-10.

On Thursday, St. Mary’s swept Southeast in swept boys and girls games.

On the boys side, St. Mary’s won the 7A game 39-7 behind 13 points from Bryce Hutchins, the 7B game 19-14, the 8A game 50-11 behind 16 points by Josh Hayes and the 8B game 42-17 behind 16 points by Isaac Bicknell.

On the girls side, Kamree Pace and Kelsey Curran scored 10 points apiece to pace the 7A girls to a 31-4 win. Gabby VanBecelaere led St. Mary’s with 10 points in the combo B team’s 26-11 win. Olivia Smith outscored Southeast by herself with 16 points in a 29-12 win.

The Northeast Junior High girls split with Uniontown on Thursday. Kelsea Choate played one fantastic offensive game, leading all scorers with 29 points in the A game, a 46-15 win for Northeast. Autumn Walker added six for the victors. Uniontown won the B contest, 7-6.

The Northeast boys split with Marmaton Valley on Monday. Vinny Lopez scored a game-high 21 points in Northeast’s 50-25 win in the A game. Northeast lost the B game 22-15, despite six points by Drew Pommier.

The Girard Middle School girls split with Altamont on Tuesday.

Girard won the seventh grade contest 25-19 behind 11 points by Shelby Smith. Altamont won the eighth grade contest 43-35, led by 14 points from Tristan Gregg; Ashley Ray and Lauren Franklin scored 15 and eight points respectively for Girard.
