The very first play of the night dictated how well this game was going to go for the Vikings. Terrible.

J.T. Richardson’s pass was picked off and returned for 31 yards. The very next play, Galena scored on a J.J. Helton run from 4 yards out and never looked back in a 57-24 home rout to end the Vikings’ two-game win streak.

It didn’t get much better for Northeast.

On the ensuing kickoff, Antonio Slingluff fumbled the ball and Helton recovered for the Bulldogs. Four plays later, Galena scored on a 29-yard pass from Nick Sievert to Casey Krei.

But things started to turn around for the Vikings before the end of the quarter, when Killian Willard faked a punt and ran for 17 yards. Four plays later, the Vikings cut the Bulldog lead to 10 on a Richardson pass to Antonio Slingluff to make the score 16-8 with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

Galena expanded their lead with another J.J. Helton touchdown run, this time for 21 yards for a 24-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter offered no refuge for the Vikings. Tyler Vancleave scored early for Galena in the second quarter to make it 32-8. Galena then opened it up a little more and didn’t look back. It started with a 30-yard TD run by Logan Johnson, then Tyler Vancleave added another score from 16 yards out. Trenton Little got another Bulldog TD run from 6 yards out. Then Logan Johnson capped off the Galena scoring with a 17-yard run for a 57-8 halftime lead.

Northeast had flashes of brilliance in the second half against Bulldog reserves when Troy Howard scored a 3-yard touchdown run. Troy Howard would later bump up the Northeast total with a 2-yard run to narrow the final score to 57-24.

Northeast (2-2) will head home for the next two games against Jayhawk-Linn and against Bluestem.
