The Frontenac Raider girls won their eighth game of the season on Friday evening, defeating the Uniontown Eagles 65-33 on the strength of a 15-4 second quarter and 21-11 third quarter.

Frontenac hit the guests from Uniontown with a little inside, little outside game — senior wing Meghan Winden scored 12 and sophomores Bailey Flora and Ryleigh McCartney combined for 23 points (Flora 15, McCartney 8).

Nine players scored at least four points for the Raiders, continuing their balanced scoring theme. Haley Wilson and Natalie Coomes each had six, Libby Warrick had five and Jennifer Long, Amanda Cicero and Lindsey Gorham each finished scoring four points.

Frontenac (8-1) begins play in the Lancer Classic on Tuesday. The Raiders are the defending champions and draw Columbus in the first round.

Girard splits with Fort Scott

The Girard girls won their fourth straight contest 42-39, but it was a dogfight Friday night with the Tigers of Fort Scott coached by Jeff Armstrong.

It was a classic clash of styles between the smaller Trojans and the bigger Tigers — Hadyn Herlocker led a Girard 3-point assault with five 3-pointers helping the junior guard finish with a career-high 30 points and Fort Scott sophomore post Brianne Lawrence scored 15 for the Tigers. Fort Scott made no 3-point shots and Girard knocked down six.

Girard overcame a three-point deficit in the final 2:00 of the game. Herlocker made a layup at the 1:32 mark to cut the lead to one and then gave the Trojans an one-point lead with a layup with only 9 seconds remaining. She closed out the scoring with two made free throws.

Jordan Davied, Carly Heatherly and Hope McLeod each scored four for Girard. Herlocker added five rebounds and four assists. Hannah Jones led with two steals. Lawrence added 12 rebounds for Fort Scott.

“Very proud of all the girls,” Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. “Everyone did their job and stepped up tonight. Fort Scott has a very nice ballclub.”

Girard (7-2) starts play in the Wilson County Classic on Monday against the Bulldogs of Independence.
The Fort Scott boys never scored less than 10 points in a quarter and the Girard boys never scored more than nine points in a quarter Friday evening, and this scoring differential added up to a 60-27 win for the Tigers.

Kyle Eckelberry led Girard with five points and five Girard players each scored four points. Cameron Woodring and Tyler Adams each led Fort Scott with 14.

Girard (4-6) plays Neodesha on Monday.

Northeast sweeps Chetopa

The Viking boys won 39-31 and the Viking girls won 44-35.

Senior forward Jessica Choate and freshman guard Kaylee Bogina propelled the girls to their first Three Rivers League conference win — Choate scoring 12 points and Bogina 11 points. Senior guard Shelby Lehman added eight and freshman Jazmin Nunn had five points for the Vikings.

Northeast head coach Lori Murphy praised the girls for their play Friday.

“It was the first time since we beat Bronaugh that we played four quarters as a team,” Murphy said.

The Northeast boys improved their overall record to 7-1 and 2-0 in TRL play.
