Despite a 30-point loss Tuesday night at home to the Oswego Indians, 70-40, Northeast head coach Scott Post said the girls played one of their best games of the year.

“We started the game in full-court man and did a good job with it,” Post said. “It wasn’t our defense as much as it was a few silly turnovers. We went on streaks and got close and then missed some open looks and turned the ball over against their pressure. They have a solid team and are very long. They got most of the rebounds. We did a poor job of boxing out and they had the size on us by a big margin.

“The pace of the game was really fast in the first half and the score at half was 41-22. Last year, we only scored 21 the entire game. We really attacked the basket and Jaycie Polhlopek did a great job in shot selection. Our sophomore and freshmen guards scored 29 points and really showed a lot of maturity. It is encouraging for the future of our program.”

Kaylee Bogina (sophomore) and Polhlopek (freshman) led Northeast with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Ultimately, the size of the Indians and turnovers in crucial spots for the Vikings proved too much during the final home game of the regular season for Northeast.

Northeast (5-11, 2-3 Three Rivers League) plays Jayhawk-Linn on Friday.

St. Paul sweeps Pleasanton
ST. PAUL — The Indian girls defeated a state-ranked league opponent 45-31 and the Indian boys kept pace with the rest of the Three Rivers League unbeatens with a 71-53 win.

Ashton Wood and Jordyn Tuck led the St. Paul girls with 13 points apiece but it was the St. Paul defense which held Pleasanton below 10 points in all of the last three quarters. In fact, Pleasanton managed only seven points in the second, the third and the fourth quarters.

St. Paul improved to 11-3, 4-0 TRL and Pleasanton dropped to 11-2, 2-1.

In the boys contest, Brayden Beachner of St. Paul led all scorers with 23 points and joining him in double figures were Jake O’Brien (17), Paul Schibi (12) and Austin O’Brien (11). The Indians scored 21 in the first quarter and 22 in the final quarter, as Pleasanton could barely down St. Paul.

St. Paul improved to 10-4, 4-0 and Pleasanton dropped to 5-8, 0-3.

Independence sweeps Baxter Springs
