The Girard Trojan girls extended their CNC League winning streak to 46 games with a gritty 54-48 nailbiter over the Riverton Rams on Tuesday.
“I felt like we came out flat in that first half,” Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. “We picked up defensive intensity in the second half. Riverton led most of the way. In the fourth quarter, we got our transitition going and went 9-for-12 from the line. Riverton (coached by Will Mallatt) played hard, played with a lot of confidence on their homecourt.”
Girard outscored Riverton 19-11 in the fourth quarter, aided by that free-throw shooting advantage.
Hadyn Herlocker made all four of her free throw attempts in the final quarter and 8 of 10 overall en route to a game-high 20 points and senior forward Jordan Davied added 13 for Girard.
Taylor Price led Riverton with 11 points and MacKenzie Dunbar added nine.
Girard (10-3, 1-0 CNC) hosts old CNC League rival Colgan (7-3, 1-0) Friday.
Riverton boys 42, Girard 36
The fourth quarter proved devastating to the efforts of the Girard boys in their CNC League opener against the Riverton Rams, as Riverton overcame scoring a single point in the first quarter and trailing after each of the first three quarters with a 22-12 fourth-quarter advantage.
Devin Alters and Trenton Stolte shared high individual scoring honors with 13 points, all for naught.
Freshman guard Landon North paced Riverton with 12 and Greyson Spriggs and Dylan Weaver each had eight.
Girard (6-8, 0-1) plays Colgan (9-3, 1-0) on Friday.
Baxter Springs girls 49, Southeast 43 (OT)
In a battle of potential CNC League title contenders, the Lions received a game-high 24 points from junior guard Nina Spence, who scored 21 of her points after halftime, including 11 in the fourth and five in overtime.
The game was tied 17-17 at halftime and 36-36 after regulation. Southeast defeated Oswego in the semifinals of the Lancer Classic in two overtimes and two of the last three games have been overtime contests for the Lancers.
Southeast enjoyed 15 points by freshman forward Olivia Powell and 14 by senior post Christine Bone. Powell made 7 of 8 foul shots for a Lancers squad that shot only 11-24; Baxter shot 14-30 in a free-throw heavy contest. No other Lancers scored above four points.
Tasha Wampler added 12 points for the Lions.
Southeast (9-4, 0-1) plays Frontenac on Homecoming this Friday, a rematch of a hard-fought Lancer Classic title game. Baxter Springs (10-3, 1-0) plays at Galena on Friday.

Aaron Lake scored alone for Southeast in the first and Daniel Peak did likewise in the third. Southeast put up a 12-11 score in the fourth, but it was all too little too late for the Lancers.
Kacey Elias scored a game-high 12 points for the Lions and his perfect 6-for-6 free throw shooting in the fourth helped ice the Lancers. Nick Abernathy added 10 and Austin Karnes eight.
Surgio Ascanio paced Southeast with 10 and Josh Thompson added seven.
Northeast girls 36, Crest 23
The Vikings of second-year head coach Lori Murphy evened their overall record at 6-6 and improved to 2-1 in the Three Rivers League with a win over the Lancers of Crest.
Senior forward Jessica Choate continued her solid play from the Tony Dubray Classic with 16 points Tuesday. Fellow senior Kenzi Tims added 11 and freshman guard Kaylee Bogina scored five.
Northeast plays St. Paul on the road Friday.
