An already banged-up Pittsburg squad lost its starting quarterback Friday night and lost its game 55-0 to Blue Valley in Class 5A, District 4 play.
With sophomore running back-linebacker Alex Barnes (mild concussion) and senior tight end-linebacker Todd Keller (ankle) already out, senior Spencer Bernhardt (already dealing with an injured left shoulder from Blue Valley West) left the game after a vicious late hit gained the Purple Dragons 15 yards but lost them their quarterback in the first quarter.
Pittsburg won the coin toss and decided to give its offense first crack. A bobbled kickoff pinned the Dragons deep in their own territory and Blue Valley senior cornerback Ryan McNerlin intercepted an overthrown Bernhardt pass on a third-and-15. The Pittsburg defense responded by stonewalling Blue Valley on a fourth-down run but field position still remained in Blue Valley’s favor.
Eventually, Blue Valley would capitalize on a McNerlin 6-yard TD run and by the 1:50 mark of the first, Blue Valley led 21-0, scoring on a Chance Nelson 9-yard run and a 89-yard pass from quarterback Logan Brettell to McNerlin.
Blue Valley led 27-0 at halftime, due to a McNerlin 84-yard TD run.
The Tigers added 28 points in the third quarter — McNerlin 66-yard run on the first play of the second half, Nelson 2-yard run, Tristan Perkins 9-yard run and Nelson 93-yard run with only 38 ticks left in the quarter.
Barnes suffered a mild concussion at some point in the Blue Valley West game last week and did not receive clearance for Friday night. Keller was injured Thursday, one day before the game.
With both teams out of the playoff picture, Pittsburg (5-3) and Blue Valley Southwest (4-4) play for pride and one district win next Friday. Blue Valley West (6-2) and Blue Valley (5-3) clash for the district title.
