The Pittsburg wrestling team finished in fifth place at the Emporia Winter Wrestling Classic on Saturday, led by seven individual medalists.
Levi Kester (106 pounds) and Brett Cobb (132) finished second, Gershom Avalos (220) and Jeremiah Jones (113) third, Jason Wools (160) fourth, and Quincy Muathe (152) and Ivan Verran (195) fifth.
Kester earned a first round bye, pinned Jaelynn Gay of Topeka Seaman in 1 minute, 42 seconds, won a 9-3 decision over Shayn Morris of Basehor-Linwood and lost a 10-2 majority decision to Christian Bowen of Goddard in the championship match.
Cobb had a first round bye, won a 5-2 decision over Brandon Fuller of Seaman, won a 10-0 majority decisiion over Sabastion Cuffel of Washburn Rural and lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to Shane Brock of Maize in the championship match.
Avalos had a first round bye, pinned Dominic Foster of Basehor-Linwood in 1:06, lost a 3-1 decision to Lex Plummer of Hutchinson, pinned Tyriq Herbin of Junction City in :24 and defeated Clayton Jackson of Chase County for third place.
Jones had a first round bye, pinned Noah Kennedy of Eudora in only 18 seconds, lost a 6-3 decision in the semifinals to P.J. Cheney of KC Turner and won third place with a 6-1 decision over Jordan Short of Washburn Rural.
Wools earned a first round bye, won a 9-3 decision over Tate Hettinger of Maize, was pinned by Noel Torres of Emporia 1:42 into their semifinal match and lost by fall to Steven Struzzo of Basehor-Linwood for third place.
Muathe pinned Matt McDonald of Washburn Rural in 4:36 and Juston Smith of Lansing in :36, lost a 3-2 decision to John Hopper of Basehor-Linwood in the semifinals, lost a 7-1 decision to Ben Soukup of Lawrence Free State and rebounded with a default win over Brett Woodruff of Goddard for fifth.
Verran won his first match over Treyvon Taylor of Lansing, lost to Deonta Thomas of Wichita East, defeated Ed Linquist of Washburn Rural in the consolation bracket, lost to James Denton of Junction City and then defeated Zack Carter of Basehor-Linwood for fifth.
Tournament winner Junction City was the No. 3-ranked school in Class 6A when the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings were released Dec. 11. Emporia and Topeka Seaman are ranked in the top 10 of 5A.
