The Pittsburg girls won their 10th straight game with a 58-53 overtime victory Friday evening over the Caney Valley Bullpups in the championship game of the Wilson County Classic.
Pittsburg (10-2) utilized its size advantage to full effect — forwards Lizzy Willis and Skyler Muff each scored 16 points for the Purple Dragons and post Mariah Forrest added 13, totaling 45 points from three PHS starters.
Bethany Barlow led Caney with a game-high 17 and freshman Desiree Nelson added 15 for the Bullpups, which finished second in the Wilson County Classic for the second consecutive season.
This is Pittsburg's first girls title at the Wilson County Classic since coming over to Fredonia or Neodesha during Tournament Week started in 2008.
Pittsburg opens SEK League play Jan. 31 with Labette County.
On Friday evening, the Pittsburg freshman girls lost a tournament game to undefeated Independence, 55-15. Marti Sinclair led Pittsburg with eight and Catherine McNeely had five.
Girard girls 63, Cherryvale 53
The Trojans won third place in the Wilson County Classic with a 63-53 victory over the top-seeded Chargers of Cherryvale, clamping down on Cherryvale in the third quarter after the Chargers led most of the first half.
"I felt we picked up the defensive intensity in the third quarter and that was the difference in the game," Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. "We have to play like that four quarters if we want to continue to win basketball games."
Girard outscored Cherryvale 17-10 in the third quarter and 18-13 in the fourth, overcoming a two-point halftime deficit.
Hadyn Herlocker scored a game-high 31 points for Girard and fellow junior guard Hope McLeod added 10. Herlocker scored 13 of her 31 in the third quarter and made 7 of her 10 free throw attempts in the fourth.
Coach Herlocker said McLeod played a well-rounded basketball game, especially on defense.
Carly Heatherly and Hannah Jones each scored six and senior forward Danica Kelly returned to the Girard lineup for her first game in January, scoring four.
Heatherly sank a 24-foot 3-pointer at the end of the first and Herlocker made another 30-foot bomb at the end of the second.
Herlocker and McLeod earned spots on the All-Tournament Team and Herlocker added All-Academic Team honors.
Girard opens CNC League play next week on the road Tuesday against Riverton and hosts St. Mary’s Colgan on Friday.
