The Pittsburg High School wrestling team finished tied for 22nd Saturday in the Mid-America Nationals hosted by Tulsa Union, a tournament proclaimed as one of the best in the region.
Pittsburg finished with 40 points and fellow Kansas schools Columbus had 47 (20th), Maize 59 (16th), Olathe North 62 (15th), Andale 66 (14th) and St. James Academy 158.5 (fifth).
PHS senior Gershom Avalos took seventh in the 220-pound division and Jason Wools finished eighth at 160.
Avalos pinned Shane Jones of Lawton in the seventh-place match and his two losses came against second-place finisher Garrett Shaw of MacArthur and fifth place Garrett Esparza of Allen (Texas). Elsewhere in the bracket, Avalos defeated Dustin Mason of Tuttle and David Feist of St. James Academy.
Wools won his first match against Tate Hettinger of Maize (12-5 decision) and lost his first match to champion Bo Nickal of Allen, who pinned his first four opponents in just over 4 minutes (including Wools in 24 seconds). Wools pinned Brandon Gay of Barnsdall on the consolation side and then lost consecutive matches to Jake Barton of Collinsville and Drew Hardy of Grove. InterMat currently ranks Nickal, a junior, fourth in the nation at 160.
Columbus’ Taylor Watkins, at the top of the 152 bracket, won his first three matches before a semifinal loss to Zac Contreras of Riordan and took fourth with a loss to Cameron Loving of Altus.
Levi Eck of Andale finished third in 182, his only loss in the semifinals to champion Lance Dixon of Edmond North, ranked eighth in the nation.
Zak Hensley of St. James Academy took fifth at 126, defeating Jacob Fontanez of Owasso in the final match.
In the latest rankings of the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, Pittsburg stood in ninth and individual wrestlers Levi Kester (fifth in 106), Jeremiah Jones (fourth in 120) and Gershom Avalos (third in 220) were considered among the state’s best.
Pittsburg returns to the mat on Saturday for its final December tournament in Emporia. The Purple Dragons open Southeast Kansas League play with a triangular hosted by Fort Scott.

GARNETT — The Frontenac wrestling team finished seventh in the Anderson County Tournament on Saturday.
Tanner Craig (138) posted the best individual finish in second place and won his first four matches against Blake Hollandsworth of Caney Valley (pinfall, 3:11), Aaron Medlock of Independence (pinfall, :22), Trevor Watson of Blue Valley Southwest (3-1 decision) and Rian Lahey of Erie (5-4 overtime decision). Craig lost to Andrew Cannon of Osawatomie in the title bout.

Ethan Hess (152) finished third, as he pinned Andy Blanton of Osawatomie in his final match. Hess won his first three matches, including a 20-second pin over teammate Dillon Brookshire and a 9-7 decision over Blanton in his first match. Hess lost to Zeph Larney of Iola by pinfall.

WICHITA — Pittsburg wrestling product Derek Koehn (157), now a junior at Fort Hays State, won first place in the Newman Invitational on Sunday and this helped Koehn earn MIAA Wrestler of the Week honors on Monday.
Koehn outlasted Bobby Williams of Ouachita Baptist 2-1 in the championship match and defeated Trent Robb of Neosho County CC 7-2 and Cory Dauphin of Central Oklahoma 3-2 en route to his title bout; his win over No. 7-ranked Dauphin avenged Koehn’s only loss of the week from the UCO-FHSU dual. Koehn owns a 14-3 record.
Nationally-ranked C.J. Napier, a Columbus native, finished second at 141 on Sunday, after losing a 3-2 decision to Josh Myers of Ouachita Baptist.
