If not for a cold first quarter, the Southeast Lancers could have stormed past the Frontenac Raiders late in the game. Unfortunately, what could have been a triumph was another close loss.

Frontenac’s first quarter helped clinch a 43-38 win later on. Although Southeast won the opening tip, they didn’t seem to win much else in the quarter, as Frontenac led 12-0 by the end of the first quarter, largely behind the hot shooting of Avery Coronado, who scored all seven of his points in the quarter.

“We got some solid looks. Sometimes, we do not execute very well offensively,” said Southeast head coach Steve Taylor. “Once again, we had trouble scoring. We definitely didn’t play too bad, though.”

After the first quarter, Southeast began to settle in to the game. Both teams began to foul regularly, and by the end of the third quarter, the score was 32-18, with Southeast relying on nine combined Cade Ulery points in the second and third quarters to pace the team.

But where Southeast was cold in the first quarter, Frontenac seemed to go cold in the entire second half. The Raiders only scored four field goals in the entire second half.

After stretching the lead to 35-20 at the start of the fourth quarter, Southeast rattled off an 8-0 run, including five points by senior Surgio Ascanio and a capping three-pointer by Ulery to shrink the lead to seven. Ulery ended the game with 16 points to lead all scorers.

Frontenac pulled the lead back out to 10 with 44.1 seconds left, but Southeast would not be counted out. Ascanio hit a three with 37.1 seconds left, then hit two out of three free throws after being fouled on another three-point attempt. A Raider free throw later, and Ascanio hit another three to draw the lead to three points with 4.3 seconds left. Ascanio scored all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter.

But the comeback was not enough. Blake Barto hit two free throws with 3.3 seconds on the clock to seal the game.

“The first quarter was good. We played even with them in the second quarter, 11-10,” said Frontenac head coach Doug Barto. “They outscored us by nine in the fourth quarter. They hit that three and did some good things. They never quit. They kept playing hard.”

Barto was happy to escape Cherokee with the first league win of the year. The Raiders (8-5, 1-0 CNC) will play at Riverton on Tuesday.

Southeast fell to 2-7 and 0-2 in the CNC and will play at St. Mary’s Colgan on Tuesday.

Raiders 55, Lancers 38

It wasn’t pretty, but Frontenac will take a 17-point road win against a conference foe.

Despite a lopsided disadvantage in fouls and a number of costly turnovers, the Raiders still turned away Southeast 55-38 thanks to an explosive third quarter in which the team scored 19 points.

“The third quarter was an amazing turning point for us,” said Frontenac girls head coach Jeremy Rakes. “We came out on fire. We made a few adjustments at half, and that worked in our favor. The girls can adjust to anything we give them.”

Those adjustments made a difference. The Raiders offense had seemed sluggish, despite turning a 10-10 tie in the second quarter to a seven-point lead at halftime.

“Instead of sagging off and making them shoot from the outside, we started playing up a bit,” Rakes said. “We started pushing the tempo; we started penetrating and kicking a little bit. We tried the run and gun on them. It opened the game up.”

Frontenac started the third quarter on an 11-2 run that turned a seven-point lead into a 16-point lead. After Southeast ended that run, Frontenac turned theheat up again with another 8-2 run that put the game well out of reach.

“They started pressuring us more in the second half, and we couldn’t face the pressure. We had too many turnovers, and [Frontenac] got to play their type of game,” said Southeast girls head coach Carla Proctor. “We gave them too many oustide looks. They hit threes that hurt us a lot.”

The Raiders were led by three players in double digits. Meghan Winden ended with 16 points, including 11 in the second half. Bailey Flora and Amanda Cicero were also dominant on the inside, hitting 10 points each. The Raiders (12-1, 1-0 CNC) will play at Riverton on Tuesday.

Southeast was led by Ashley and Amy Martin, who each scored eight and 10 points, respectively. The Lancers fell to 9-5 (0-2 CNC) and will play at Colgan on Tuesday.
