The Southeast Lancers split a pair of varsity games Tuesday night with the St. Paul Indians, winning the boys contest 41-31 and losing the girls contest 48-35.
Defense was the key in the win for the Southeast boys: St. Paul only reached 10 points once in a quarter, including a low of five in the second as Southeast enjoyed a 23-15 halftime advantage.
The Lancers increased their lead to 37-23 entering the fourth.
St. Paul proved its own worst enemy at the foul stripe, making only 8 of 17.
However, Southeast left at least seven points behind with 4-11 free throws.
Southeast blanked St. Paul guard Anthony Diskin, one of the Indians’ key players, and had three of its own players reach double figures: Daniel Peak 11 points, Travis Trayer 10 and Josh Thompson 10, all three seniors.
In the girls contest, St. Paul outscored Southeast 28-18 in the second half.
While no Southeast player reached double figures, St. Paul’s Jordan Tuck had no problem, well, except for a 4-9 night at the foul line. Tuck scored a game-high 21 points and eight of those points came in the final stanza.
Rachel Bole led Southeast with seven points and Olivia Powell added six.
The Southeast girls dropped to 4-2.
Both teams will return to play in January.
