ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Pittsburg State softball earned a pair of wins on the first day of action in the Hy-Vee Classic on the campus of Missouri Western State on Friday.

Pitt State (19-7) opened the day with a 2-0 win over Winona State before closing Friday with an 11-1 victory over St. Cloud State in five innings.

The Gorillas’ offense got hot in the second game, putting crooked numbers up on the scoreboard in the second, third and fifth innings to earn the 10-run win.

Jenna Bolton put Pitt State on the scoreboard in the top of the second after driving in a pair of runs on a double to deep left-center.

Kaity Kukowski followed with a single through the left side of the infield on a 1-2 count to drive in Bolton and make the score 3-0.

Pitt State’s Kristen Van Hoosen slapped a two-run home run to left field, driving in Lawren McKinney, in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Alyssa Coletto doubled in a run in the bottom of the fourth to get St. Cloud State on the scoreboard.

Pitt State put the game away in the fifth, crossing the plate six times to build its cushion to 10 runs.

Myka Hayward and McKinney each drove in runs with doubles, with Van Hoosen singling up the middle to drive home McKinney to make the score 8-1.

Tiara Ewy had an RBI single later in the frame.

Bree Cornett (5-2) earned the win in the circle for the Gorillas. She tossed 3.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and striking out four.

Kate Kopeck (8-2) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing seven runs on four hits and a strikeout in four inning of work.

Maya Keating, Morgan Emmans, Jaiden Lund and Coletto each tallied one hit in the contest for St. Cloud State.

Pitt State starter Emmie Robertson (13-3) blanked Winona State after allowing just one hit in a complete-game effort in the circle. She struck out three Warriors en route to the win.

Robertson allowed her only hit in the top of the first with one out.

Kristen Van Hoosen singled in Jenna Bolton in the second inning to give PSU a 1-0 lead, which soon doubled after Kaity Kukowski singled home the second run of the inning to push the lead to 2-0, which is all the run support Robertson needed.

PSU takes on Mary at 10 a.m. and caps off day two with a 2 p.m. matchup against Upper Iowa on Saturday in the Hy-Vee Classic.
