JOPLIN — The St. Joseph Mustangs completed the two-game sweep over the Joplin Outlaws with an 8-5 win on Wednesday inside Joe Becker Stadium.

The interdivisional matchup favored the Mustangs, as they were lifted to the three-run victory on the strength of early offense.

St. Joseph hit the ground running with five runs in the opening frame, before the Outlaws responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half to cut the early deficit to 5-2.

Zack Ehlen set the table with a leadoff single, before moving over to third on a base hit off the bat of Kaleb DeLatorre.

Following an infield fly, Caden Fowler drew a walk to load the bases with one out.

A strikeout in the next plate appearance notched the second out of the inning and gave the Mustangs a chance escape danger, but Jeff Wetzler came through for two-run single to put Joplin on the board.

The Outlaws matched a run by the Mustangs in the third inning with a run of their own in the fourth to push the score to 6-3.

Kylar Cook got the Outlaws going with a one-out single, before moving up to second on a wild pitch and coming around to score on a base hit by Grant McDaniel.

Joplin narrowed the gap to one at 6-5 with a pair of runs in the seventh frame.

The inning began with a single by DeLattorre, who went from first to home on a triple off the bat of Fowler.

Fowler crossed the plate in the next at-bat thanks to a productive groundout by Calem Nutting.

The Mustangs got both runs back in the ninth and cut the Outlaw's rally short by holding them scoreless in final two innings.

AT THE DISH

DeLatorre had a multi-hit ballgame with two runs scored, while Wetzler drove in two runs on one hit.

ON THE BUMP

Joplin’s starter John Boushelle was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs on five hits with one strikeout through one inning.

Hunter Wienhoff provided quality innings out of the bullpen, notching eight strikeouts with one earned run on one hit in seven innings of work.
