BAXTER SPRINGS — Both Girard High School basketball teams picked up the first win of the respective seasons on Friday against Baxter Springs, as the girls earning a 41-27 victory before the boys finished the job with a 58-52 win.
LADY TROJANS ROLL TO BIG WIN OVER LIONS
It was all Lady Trojans in the first game of the night, coasting to a 41-27 win to improve to 1-1 on the season.
“We played hesitant early on, but we were able to settle in and play quality basketball,” GHS head coach Brad Herlocker said. “We did a good job of applying pressure, hustling and turning defense into offense. They wore us down a bit, but we have a good rotation of players and made a nice run in the second quarter and the momentum from that carried over into the second half. Baxter has a nice team and they are well coached, so it was a good win for us.”
Sydnee Crain led the way for Girard’s offense in the win, scoring 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers,
Jaada Valley contributed eight points, while her teammates Brittley Bailey and Gabbi Sands contributed six and five points respectively.
Jordanne Ferguson and Kalyn Flaharty rounded out the scoring for the Trojans with two points apiece.
GIRARD BOYS HANG ON TO BEAT LIONS
The GHS boys’ team followed it up with a 58-52 win to close out the night.
Baxter managed to trim a 20-point deficit in the third quarter down to one, but the Trojans executed when it mattered most and held on to win by six.
Caleb Muia was the leading scorer in the win with 26 points.
Also scoring in double figures was Ethan Goff with 16 points.
