FRONTENAC — Scoring three runs in the first three innings, the Frontenac Boys’ baseball team’s offense scored early and often on their way to a 8-3 win over Independence Friday.
Cooper Cleland sparked the Raiders in the first frame, hitting a single with one out in the inning. Cal Strand’s double to left field moved Cleland to third, before crossing the plate after an Independence error on a Jake Lee ground ball.
Holding a 1-0 lead, Cleland would drive home Jake Beckmann in the third for Frontenac. Peyton Brown singled home Kade Chastain in the next at-bat to give Frontenac the 3-0 lead.
After allowing a run from independence in the top of the fifth, Lee would score on a wild pitch and Broc Ginavan came home on a Ryan Raio groundout to push the lead to 5-1.
The Bulldog’s Wyatt Chism cut the lead by one on an RBI single in the top of the sixth, but the Raiders continued to build on the lead in their half of the inning. Lee would double home Strand and Jake Wilbert, and Ginavan’s line drive to left field brought home Lee to extend the lead to 8-2.
Independence scored a run on an error in the seventh, but Frontenac was able to grab the win.
Both teams hit the ball well in the game, with the Raiders holding a slight 10-9 lead in hits. Both teams had four errors.
Ginavan paced Frontenac with three hits and one RBI. Lee went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cleland had two hits and one RBI. Brown, Strand, Wilbert, and Beckmann also added in one hit each.
Kooper Loy earned the win on the mound, pitching four shutout innings with two strikeouts. Chastain and Beckmann pitched in relief.
Cal Bloomfield went 2-for-4 at the plate for Independence. Ryan Bruce also had two hits. Logan Copeland and Chism had one RBI each.
Calvin Edwards started the game for Independence, allowing five runs and seven hits on four innings played. Bruce would pitch two innings in relief, allowing three runs.
Frontenac will host a doubleheader against Galena at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
