SALINA — Undefeated Girard Softball overpowered Lindsborg-Smoky Valley HS, 6-1, in Thursday’s State 4A DII Softball Tournament opener in Salina.
Shelby Smith, who came into the contest with an 1.04 ERA and a 14-0 record, continued her dominant play on the mound, allowing just the lone run in seven innings.
The Trojans took an early 2-0 lead after one frame. Marci Heatherly extended the lead to three with a two-run RBI double in the third inning.
After allowing an Smoky Valley run in the sixth, Shaylun Grosstephan responded with a two-run RBI double to push the Trojan lead to 5-1. Smith drove in a run in the next at-bat to give the Trojans a 6-1 advantage.
The defending champion Trojans are the last remaining undefeated team in the tournament, after first-seeded Clay Center Community/Wakefield fell to Galena high school 6-0. Burlington High School (21-1), the number three seed in the tournament, fell in extra innings to Baldwin on Thursday as well.
Girard are familiar with the scrappy Bulldogs, scraping by the Bulldogs 2-1 and 6-4 in a doubleheader earlier this season.
On a afternoon that was full of upsets, one involving area school St. Mary’s-Colgan, as they beat top seeded Elkhart in the 2-1A State baseball tournament, the Trojans rose to the challenge.
Girard will face off against Baldwin at 11 a.m. on Thursday. If the Trojans win they will play in the championship game at 2 p.m. If the Trojans are upset by Baldwin they will compete in the third place match at 1 p.m.
