GIRARD — Girard started the 2018 football season with a 26-0 shutout win against Baxter Springs. Senior Chandler Humble led a great Trojan ground game, rushing for 96 yards on 16 carries. Humble scored the Trojan’s first touchdown on a 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ty Norris.
Girard began the second quarter at their 36. Norris threw a 63-yard strike to Evan Troike for a touchdown to push the lead to 12-0.
Late in the second quarter, Kreed Curran caught a pass in the end zone with 36 seconds left to give Girard a 18-0 lead at the half.
Baxter Springs started the second half with momentum. Sophomore Kain McCully began the series with a 11-yard rush.
The Trojans forced a fumble at the 14-yard line to gain possession in the red zone. Curran punched it into the endzone on a end-around with 3 minutes to go in the third quarter.
With three previous failed extra-point attempts, Norris rushed for a 2-point conversion.
Norris finished 6-9 with 128 yards and two touchdowns.
The Trojan defense held the Lions with only 66 total yards of offense. With inexperienced receivers, and Girard’s constant pressure, Baxter Springs senior quarterback Trey White was held to 31 yards. The Lions had a net 28 yards on the ground the first half, and 17 yards in the second half.
Girard will host the Galena Bulldogs next week.
