Pittsburg State University tailback Caleb Farabi and wide receiver Marques Nelson have been selected to compete in the 2009 Valero Cactus Bowl, an all-star game featuring NCAA Division II senior football players.
The game will be played on Jan. 9, 2009, at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Farabi (5-7, 171) earned unanimous first-team All-MIAA honors during his senior season this fall. The Pittsburg native carried the ball 260 times for 1,387 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and 106.7 yards per game. He also caught 32 passes for 298 yards (9.3 ypc) and one TD.
Nelson (6-3, 226) garnered second-team All-MIAA recognition during his senior campaign. The Kansas City, Kan., native caught a team-leading 45 passes for 802 yards (17.8 ypc) and eight touchdowns.
The Cactus Bowl was originally known as the Snow Bowl and was played at Fargo, N.D. from 1994 through 2000. Starting in 2001, the Snow Bowl was renamed the Cactus Bowl and has been played in Kingsville, Texas. There have been over 100 players drafted into the NFL who played in the Cactus Bowl. All net profits from the Cactus Bowl are donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The 2009 edition of the Cactus Bowl will feature 19 All-Americans and is headlined by six of the 24 Harlon Hill Trophy candidates; Ted Schlafke (Minnesota-Duluth), Brian McNeill (Nebraska-Omaha), Charly Martin (West Texas A&M), Corey Russell (Tusculum), Kevin McCabe (California-PA) and Mike Washington (West Chester).
Farabi and Nelson are part of a contingent of 10 MIAA players selected to compete in the all-star game. Other MIAA players include McNeill, Zach Miller and Jeff Souder of Nebraska-Omaha, Reid Kirby and Tom Pestock of NW Missouri State, Les Hammers of Truman, Jamie Hanson of Missouri Western and John Wood of Central Missouri.
