GIRARD —

The Girard Trojan baseball team put the runs on the board, but Parsons found a way to strike back.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings scored four runs and added another three in the sixth to put away Girard 10-6 in the Class 4A regional baseball tournament championship at Katy Park in Chanute Wednesday.
“It was one of those games,” said Girard head coach Keith Matlock. “We came out and got ahead then they would answer but in the end they put up a few too many and we could never get that made up.”
Girard got to the championship by knocking off top-seeded Coffeyville 8-4 in the semifinals earlier in the day behind solid pitching from Taylor Woods and J.D. Heatherly. The duo combined to hold the Golden Tornado to just five hits in seven innings.
The Trojans got on the board first against Parsons when — in the first inning — Tyler Bennett led off with a single and Trey Scallions followed with a single. With two outs, Tanner Poppe reached on an error that scored both Bennett and Scallions, putting the Trojans up 2-0.
Parsons took the lead in the third with three runs.
In the fifth, Scallions started with a two-out single then Heatherly followed with an RBI double. Jeremy Grosstephen smacked an RBI triple scoring Heatherly then Poppe doubled to score Grosstephen, giving the Trojans a 5-3 lead.
Tyler Gilley and Jordan Barlow each hit two-run singles in the fifth to give the Vikings back the lead for good.
Girard did chip away at the lead in the sixth after Woods drew a two-out walk and Bennett hit an RBI double but it was not enough as Girard ended its season with a 10-11 mark.
