In his 19th season leading the Pittsburg State football team, head coach Chuck Broyles has one more accolade to add to his resume.

On Saturday, he was named the Liberty Mutual Division II Coach of the Year.

It marks the first time that Broyles has earned the honor.

“I try to keep things in perspective,” Broyles said. “But, the way this was voted on really makes this special.”

The honor was voted on by fans (20 percent), members of the selection committee of the College Football Hall of Fame (55 percent) and by members of the national college football media (25 percent).

Broyles joined Alabama’s Nick Saban (Division I-A), James Madison’s Mickey Matthews (Division I-AA) and Mount Union College’s Larry Kehres (Division III) as this season’s honorees.

With the award comes $50,000 from Liberty Mutual Insurance to support each coach’s favorite charity and $20,000 in scholarship funding for their school’s alumni association.

“How can you not get excited about that?” Broyles said.

Broyles said that he has yet to determine who will be the benefactor of the $50,000 in charitable money.

“I have a list and it will be fun to figure all of that out,” Broyles said.

During his 19 years at Pitt State, Broyles has compiled a 193-41-2 overall record and has averaged more than 10 wins per season in his nearly two-decade career.

The Gorillas have been to the Division II national playoffs 15 times under Broyles and has had National Championship appearances in 1991, 1992, 1995 and 2004.

In addition, the Gorillas have produced 15 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans since January 2000 and 44 percent of the current PSU squad have maintained a 3.0 grade point average or higher.

“This award just speaks well of the entire program,” Broyles said.

PSU offensive coordinator Tim Beck was chosen earlier as the Division II Coordinator of the Year.
