Cartagena named MIAA POY

Pittsburg State Volleyball senior Pamela Cartagena has been named the MIAA Player of the Year the league announced Wedensday. Cartagena was a unanimous selection to the All-MIAA First Team and five other Gorilla volleyball players were also named to all-conference teams.
Cartagena is a four-time First-Team All-MIAA selection. She is the first Gorilla player to be named the conference player of the year. Cartagena has led the Gorillas all season averaging 4.38 points and 4.04 kills per game. She is second on the team with 4.11 digs per game.
She currently has 1,816 career kills and is just 10 kills from setting a new school record in that category. Cartagena is a two-time All-American. She is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico and is the daughter of Pedro and Felicita Cartagena.
Senior setter Emily Vosseler and sophomore outside hitter Corrine Stringer were named to the All-MIAA second team. Junior libero Cassie Wilson was named to the third team, and junior Molly Bergkamp and freshman Brooke Fay, both middle blockers, earned honorable mention recognition.
This is the second All-MIAA honor for Vosseler, who earned honorable mention recognition in 2008. Vosseler is second in the conference averaging 11.5 assists per set. She currently has 1,457 assists on the season, which is the fifth-best single season total in school history.
She also has 3,424 career assists, good for second in Pitt State program history. Vosseler is from Leavenworth and is the daughter Shirley Vosseler and the late Tom Vosseler.
Stringer is second on the team averaging 3.75 points and 3.32 kills per set. She is fifth in the conference for kills and sixth for points. She is from Topeka and the daughter of John and Telisa Stringer.
Wilson leads the Gorillas with 4.80 digs per set, which ranks fourth in the MIAA. She has 1,266 career digs which is the fifth best total in school history.
Wilson is from Pittsburg and is the daughter of Carrie Wilson and Arnie Burton. Bergkamp is the Gorillas third leading scorer with 3.14 points and 2.66 kills per set. She is the team's second leading blocker with 57 total blocks.
She is the daughter of John and Jan Bergkamp and is from Blue Rapids.
Fay is Pitt State's leading blocker. She has recorded 65 total blocks on the season and averaged 2.11 points per set. She is from Parkville, Mo. and is the daughter of John Fay and Debbie Fay.
