It was not the best way to come off an upset win and it means that the Pittsburg State women’s basketball team has some regrouping to do.
The Gorillas scored just 18 points in the second half and suffered their first loss of the season, 75-46 to Tarleton State in the opening game of the DFW Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premier hosted by Texas Woman's University, Friday night.
It was the Gorillas worst loss since a 94-49 loss to Emporia State on Feb. 20, 2008.
The Gorillas did not have any players score in double figures. Senior DePrice Taylor led the team with nine points.
Senior Maya Onikute and junior Laura Glenn each added seven. Senior Nicole McCombs led the team with six rebounds.
Onikute and Glenn each added five rebounds.
Tarleton's Brittnie Haley led all players with 20 points and 10 rebounds. JoAnne Jones added 12 points, while Sonya Sundberg and Shelby Adamson each scored 10.
Pittsburg State scored the first points in the game, but then hit a five minute scoring draught leading to a 13-0 Tarleton State run.
A three from Bailey Waugh and a Taylor jumper brought the game within seven with 13:36 to go in the first half. The Gorillas continued to fight, but could not stop the TexAnns.
A Roberts three with just under 10 minute left in the opening half gave PSU a chance, as they only trailed 20-16, but a 13-2 Tarleton state run put Pitt State down by double digit again.
The Gorillas were not able to recover and took a 41-28 deficit into the locker room at the half.
The second half was much the same, as the Gorillas were never able to recover from their early deficit. PSU did not score in the last 7:39 of the game.
Pitt State will take on host Texas Woman’s at 4 p.m. today in the final game of the tournament
