The Pittsburg High School basketball teams swept the Fort Scott Tigers on Friday night at Pittsburg High School, winning the varsity girls contest 35-23 and the varsity boys contest 56-51 in overtime.

Leading the Fort Scott boys 45-36 with 3:44 remaining in the game, empty possessions (turnovers and missed free throws) cost Pittsburg on the offensive end and Tyler Adams hit a pair of 3-point shots to help Fort Scott force an extra period at 45-45.

In overtime, taking advantage of foul trouble on Fort Scott players like Adams, Johnathan Stark and Daniel Durbin, Pittsburg made seven of its nine free throws in overtime, highlighted by four straight makes from Jalen King.

“We got to the free-throw line, which is good,” Pittsburg head coach Kiley Roelfs said. “I thought in the second half, we were just a lot stronger with the basketball than we were in the first half and because of that it enabled us to get to the free-throw line. You like to feel that you have some kids who can shoot it from there and I think we do.”

Pittsburg big men Stefon Rich and FeDor Lomax played aggressive inside on both ends, with Rich swatting away several Fort Scott attempts defensively and creating old-fashioned three-point plays on the offensive end. Lomax also made Fort Scott pay with inside baskets. Rich and Lomax combined to score 23 points.

“That was an emphasis coming in,” Roelfs said. “You’ve got to credit Fort Scott. They’re a good team and they knew we’d be trying to get it inside there. Luckily, when they were doing a good job of stopping us doing that, our guards stayed aggressive and we got some good things out of our guards to keep Fort Scott honest.”
Senior guard Jornell Fondren had only two points in the first half of play, then exploded for 16 of his 18 points in the second half and overtime.

“I think every guy on our team would tell you Jornell’s one of our energy guys and I thought his energy was a key in that second half,” Roelfs said.

Fort Scott senior guard Cameron Woodring led all players with 21 points, as he made 9 of 9 free throws and started his good shooting night after going in for a layup upon catching the opening tip.

The Pittsburg girls earned their first win of the season and the first win under new head coach Kim Peterson by outscoring Fort Scott 15-4 in the fourth quarter and holding Fort Scott to only two second-half field goals on Friday.

Peterson said the fourth quarter was the best Pittsburg had played in three games so far this season.

“The reason why is because that’s the quarter where we had the least amount of turnovers out of the three games,” Peterson said. “We knew Fort Scott had some players who were right-hand dominant, so we really tried to force their players to the left a lot and get out in the passing lanes and put a lot of pressure on the ballhandlers. We also blocked out a lot better.”

Pittsburg senior Skyler Muff led all players with 13 points. Lizzy Willis and Mercedes Vogel each had six points. Mackenzie Spresser made five free throws. Mariah Forrest had three points and Bethanne Elliott added two.
Despite foul trouble, Fort Scott sophomore Brianna Lawrence had 11 points to lead a Fort Scott team with only three players who reached the scoring column on Friday night.
