The Pittsburg State volleyball team finished its season with a three-set win Saturday night over winless Missouri Southern (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) in the Leggett & Platt Center.
Crystal Whitten led the Gorillas offensively with 13 kills and added three digs. Nicole Rockhold made her final collegiate match a good one with another double-double performance of 11 kills and a team-high 11 digs. Brooke Fay, another senior who left her mark on the PSU volleyball program, added nine kills and four blocks. Becca Pearson, senior setter, led with 20 assists.
The Gorillas finished hitting .302 for the match against the woeful Lions.
With this being the official conference match, Pitt State volleyball wins a point in the Sonic Trophy Series on the same day the football team won another point for the Gorillas.
Pitt State finished its season 17-13 overall and 7-10 in the MIAA, a season bookended by winning streaks — seven matches to begin the season and five matches to end the first winning season for the Gorillas since 2009. Pitt State finished in a three-way tie for seventh in the MIAA . . . Fort Hays State and Central Oklahoma made the conference tournament.
Meanwhile, Southern completed a dubious 0-30 (0-18 MIAA) season by winning only 10 of a possible 100 sets this season. Southern lost 22 matches in three sets.
