Coming off a 2009 campaign that could only be described as “uncharacteristic,” the Pittsburg State University football team will have its work cut out for themselves in 2010.
On Monday, during the MIAA preseason coaches lunch in Kansas City, Mo., the Gorillas were tabbed to finish sixth in the conference by both the league’s coaches and media.
The poll was released as part of the league’s annual Kickoff activities.
The Gorillas, who return seven starters and 37 letterwinners from a 2009 squad that posted a 5-6 record and 3-6 MIAA mark, received 48 points in the MIAA Coaches Poll to finish one point behind fifth-place Central Missouri. Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State received nine first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team) and 81 points to garner an unanimous first-place selection.
Nebraska-Omaha was second with 65 points, while Washburn was picked third with one first-place vote and 62 points. Missouri Western was selected fourth with 61 points.
The Bearcats also were the unanimous first-place selection of 33 regional media members taking part in the MIAA Media Poll. Northwest got all 33 first-place votes and 330 points. Washburn was picked second with 259
points, one point ahead of Missouri Western (258). Nebraska-Omaha was fourth with 236 points, followed by Central Missouri (210) and Pitt State (159) in fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the recent, USA Today Preseason Division II football poll, the Bearcats were slated as the top team in the country. Washburn joins Northwest in the top 10, coming in at No. 9. Missouri Western was voted No. 16, while Nebraska-Omaha will begin the year at No. 21.
The Gorillas report to preseason camp Friday and they open the 2010 season with a road game Aug. 28 against Central Oklahoma, which will join the MIAA (along with Northeastern State) in 2012.
The official start to the 2010 football season is Thursday, Aug. 26, with MIAA play beginning Saturday, Sept. 11.
