The Frontenac Raider girls used a powerful second quarter surge to defeat the Neodesha Blue Streaks 58-24 to improve their record to 2-1 for the season.

Bailey Flora scored 18 points with most of them coming in the first half.

The game got off to a sluggish start as both teams had a combined 13 fouls in the first half alone while the Blue Streaks at one point in the first quarter had nine turnovers. There were four turnovers alone in the first minute of the game.

Then, the Raiders went on a 7-1 run and did not look back. Haley Wilson scored a 3-pointer as time expired to give Frontenac a 15-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

“That was a very good win, on the road,” said head coach Jeremy Rakes on his postgame radio show. “We really want to put pressure on the opponents. We want to work on the rotation. Our diamond press has been phenomenal.”

Everyone on the Raiders saw playing time.

Refusing to take their foot off the gas pedal, the Raiders — fueled by Flora’s scoring — continued to dominate. Flora would not be the only deadly threat the Blue Streaks had to worry about. Ryleigh McCartney went on a 6-0 run in just one minute to extend the lead to 24-5. That lead would galvanize to 27 points at halftime.

The Blue Streaks were responsible for 18 turnovers in the first half while Rakes put in five new substitutes in the second quarter.
An inside shot by Flora made it 41-7, which would be the Lady Raiders largest lead of the night.

Flora and Sam Bonner had both been battling illness during the week but Rakes believed both players played well for not having to practice much.

“Bailey was home sick Wednesday,” Rakes said. “She hadn’t been at practice much but she studied game film on her down time. She had a great game     coming out. She (Bonner) had some great steals. They work well together.”

Bonner had nine points, including a 3-pointer.

Neodesha’s Meagan Littau was the only force the Raiders had to reckon with as she had seven blocked shots to go along with her six points. She had six points for the evening.

Littau had been the leading scorer for the Blue Streaks so far this season but what was contained throughout the game.

“We knew game plan going in that she (Littau) was a competitive girl,” Rakes said. “If we could control her, we could do well. She is a good player. We had one person in front of her and one person behind her at all times and we weren’t going to let her get away.”

Bria Granger was the leading scorer for the Blue Streaks with eight points.

The loss left Neodesha at 0-3 for the season.

It was the second win of the season for Frontenac and they will next face Columbus on Tuesday.

Rakes is anticipating Columbus to be playing with a lot of guards.
“Columbus is going to be very guard-oriented,” Rakes said. “They have a lot of young girls who played a lot of minutes last year. I’m looking forward to it.”

A fourth quarter comeback was not enough for the Neodesha Blue Streaks as the Frontenac Raiders came away with their first victory of the season, winning 56-46.

It was a battle between two teams that had yet to win a game this season.

The Raiders took a 17-10 lead in the first quarter after an and-1 by Blake Barto. Kyle Johnson of the Blue Streaks would answer with two free throws in the second quarter to narrow the lead to seven. Avery Coronado responded with two 3-pointers to give the Raiders a 25-15 lead. Justice Baird scored four points in one minute to make it a five-point game before Barto made an outside shot followed by an inside field goal to close out the first half with a 32-20 lead for the Raiders.

Barto scored 13 points alone in the first half en route to a game-high 17.

The Raiders would continue to score in the second half while the Blue Streaks could not find any sort of answer in the third.

An and-1 by Tyce Hanna shortened the lead to 13 points.

With the Raiders in front 51-35 in the fourth, free throws by Johnson seemed the only thing keeping the Blue Streaks alive.

The Blue Streaks managed to narrow the lead to 10 points in the final minute but it would be too late. Coronado was fouled and sent to the line where he made both of his free throws followed by a miss 3-pointer by Hanna and the Raiders held on for their first win.
