Both the Northeast boys and girls basketball teams found it difficult sledding Friday night against the Olpe Eagles.
In the first two nights of play in the Marmaton Valley Tournament, Northeast played solid in the second half. Not on Friday night in the championship game.
Olpe pulled away from Northeast after halftime, turning a 16-15 halftime advantage into a 41-22 win.
Joe Redeker led the Eagles with a game-high 18 points and Brandon Baumgardner added 10 points. Freshman guard Drew Mills led Northeast with eight points. The Vikings dropped to 3-1 this season and host cross-state rival Liberal (Mo.) on Monday for their first home game.
Meanwhile, the struggling Viking girls ran into the machine known as Olpe, the No. 1 ranked girls team in Class 1A.
The Eagles led 19-3 after one quarter and 45-15 at halftime en route to an 83-27 rout of the Vikings.
Olpe had four players in double figures — Kelsey Hendricks 18 on six 3-point shots, Elana Flott 18, Ashlyn Spellman 16 and Paige Barnard 11 — and Emily Samuels added nine. Hendricks and Samuels combined for nine 3-pointers.
Kaylee Bogina led Northeast (1-3) with 12 points.
The Northeast boys defeated West Elk 53-36 on Thursday, starting out relatively slow before scoring at least 13 points each of the final three quarters. Northeast made five more field goals and seven more free throws than the Patriots.
Noah Popejoy led the Vikings with 12 points and J.T. Richardson finished with nine, five points on free throws. Dennis Hensley added seven.
The Northeast girls lost 31-25 to West Elk, despite nine points from Gretchen Mills and seven from Bogina.
The powerhouse Olpe girls dominated Marmaton Valley, leading 26-2 after one quarter and 44-4 at halftime en route to a 71-17 win — Olpe leading scorer Emily Samuels alone outscored Marmaton Valley, 20-17. On the boys side, Olpe defeated Marmaton Valley 54-25 and held Cole Becker scoreless.
