Panther freshman close season unbeaten

PITTSBURG —

St. Mary’s-Colgan freshman Chris Smith accounted for three touchdowns to lead the Panther freshman football team to a 32-14 season-ending win over Frontier Trail on Monday.
After Frontier Trail’s Jordan Ward scored the first touchdown of the game, Smith scored his first on a 43-yard pass from Sam Gilbert in the first quarter to cut Trail’s lead to 7-6.
Seth Sinnett gave the Panthers their first lead of the night on a 19-yard run in the second quarter, putting the Panthers up 12-7.
Trail retook the lead in the third as Ward scored on their first play from scrimmage on a 78-yard touchdown run.
Colgan went on to score 20 unanswered points including a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Gilbert towards the end of the third quarter to give the Panthers a 20-14 lead.
Smith scored both touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including runs of 21 and 5 yards to seal the win.
The victory gives the Colgan freshman an undefeated season in 2008.

Riverton falls in regionals
SPRING HILL — The Riverton Rams’ soccer team’s stay in the Class 4-1A regional soccer tournament was a short one as they fell 4-0 to Spring Hill on Monday.
Spring Hill had 12 shots on goal and connected their first in the 21st minute when Javon Duncan scored.
Three minutes later, Eric Kahn scored to put Spring Hill up 2-0 in the first half.
In the second half, Cody Jesse scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute and Zach Weaver hit paydirt for Spring Hill in the 60th minute to close out the win.
The Rams had a total of four shots on goal and committed seven fouls.
