The Pittsburg girls stayed undefeated and won their first game of 2013 with a 52-47 win Friday night over Coffeyville.

After foul trouble got her down in her last game out at home against Independence, senior Alaura Short returned to her previous form with her third 20-point game in five games this season. Short led all scorers with 20.
Katy Short added nine points, Lizzy Willis and Bethanne Elliott seven apiece, Mercedes Vogel five, and senior Brianna Maxwell added three in her return to the Pittsburg lineup after missing the first four games of the season. Ashlee Beitzinger reached the scoring column with a single point.

Devin Cosper led the Golden Tornado with 18 points.

Pittsburg returns home Tuesday night for a showdown with Labette County.
The JV girls lost 51-23. Katie Phalen led Pittsburg with seven points and Sam Bollinger added five, Beitzinger, MaKayla Pichler and Megan Davis each had three, and Kailey Curtis added two.

The Coffeyville boys pulled away from Pittsburg in the fourth quarter, turning a 47-40 advantage entering the final stanza into a 65-52 win.

Colgan splits with Columbus

Columbus sophomore Nate Bole came out gunning from 3-point range Friday night against the Panthers at the St. Mary’s Colgan Fieldhouse, helping the guests take a 17-8 lead after one quarter with three 3-pointers.

However, we all know that opponents rarely keep a lead in the Fieldhouse and sure enough, Colgan responded with a 14-4 second quarter to gain a 22-21 halftime lead en route to a 55-42 win.

Colgan senior forward Dyson Dechant continued to play within himself, leading the Panthers with 19 points. Luke Marquardt played his best game, finishing with 16 and sophomore Austin Commons added eight.

Bole was the lone Titan in double figures with a game-high 21 points and he made five 3-point shots. On his postgame radio show, Colgan head coach Wayne Cichon said the Colgan defensive pressure eventually wore down Bole, who was both the primary ballhandler and ball scorer for the Titans.
Colgan improved to 5-1 with the win and play a boys only with Nevada (Mo.) on Tuesday night.

The Panthers lost the girls contest 47-36, as Colgan dropped to 3-3. The girls return to action next Friday at home against the Wichita Defenders.

Girard swept by Chanute

CHANUTE — Coaches seem to always fear that first game back in January and a cold start and faulty execution cost the state-ranked Girard girls Friday night against the host Blue Comets in a matchup of Class 4A state qualifiers from last season, 47-41.

Girard swept by Chanute

CHANUTE — Coaches seem to always fear that first game back in January and a cold start and faulty execution cost the state-ranked Girard girls Friday night against the host Blue Comets in a matchup of Class 4A state qualifiers from last season, 47-41.

“I felt like we played well defensively against their double inside-out game and controlled their scorers,” Girard head coach Brad Herlocker said. “We just did not execute in the halfcourt offense like we can. We actually outrebounded them even though they have the 6-foot-3 Flowers (Macy Flowers) girl and we’re outsized at almost every sport. I was pleased with the hustle and the heart of the girls. It was just hard to finish at the basket with their height and our execution in our halfcourt offense was not always there.”
Hadyn Herlocker led Girard with a game-high 18 points and interior players Ashley Johnson and MaCahla Leslie added six and four, respectively. Carly Heatherly also scored six points for the 5-2 Trojans.

Anna Bagshaw led Chanute with 16 points and Brenna Olson added 11. Darian Rubow, Macy Flowers and Shelby Trout each added six for the Blue Comets.

The Chanute boys pulled away from Girard in the second half after leading 17-14 at halftime, enjoying a 44-32 win.

Frontenac boys win on hot shooting

LAMAR, Mo. — The Frontenac Raiders found their 3-point shooting was not affected by the layoff from December to early January, parlaying 60 percent 3-point shooting into a 58-44 win Friday over cross-state opponent Lamar.

Avery Coronado was particularly feeling it against the Tigers, scoring a career-high 35 points on 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. Matt Standlee added eight points, Nick Zafuta four and Blake Barto three.

Frontenac evened its record at 3-3.

Baxter Springs, Riverton split

BAXTER SPRINGS — The Baxter Springs girls won 59-23 and the Riverton boys won 85-43 in a doubleheader split of blowouts Friday night.
In the boys contest, it was Baxter Springs 43, the Norths 42 as Grant North scored 23 points and Landon North added 19 for the victorious Rams.
Nick Abernathy and Cody Rowe led Baxter Springs with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Lions hit five 3-point shots, three by Rowe.

The Baxter Springs girls were led by three scorers in double figures — Aleigh Grimes a game-high 19 points, Nina Spence 15 and Ashleigh Grimes 14. The Grimes combined to outscore Riverton 33-23.

MacKenzie Dunbar led Riverton with eight points.
