The Fort Scott Greyhounds earned 11 All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) selections from voting which took place Nov. 5 in El Dorado, home of the league champion Butler.
FSCC were led by first team selections — freshman offensive guard Kareem Are (6-foot-6, 300 pounds), redshirt freshman defensive end William Bland (6-6, 250), sophomore linebacker Stephan Martin (6-1, 215) and sophomore cornerback Kevin Short (6-2, 185).
Martin registered 77 tackles (53 solo, 24 assist), 16.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and three breakups; Martin led FSCC in tackles.
Bland made his tackles count for losses: 12.5 of his 27 tackles (16 solo, 11 assist) resulted in losses of 68 total yards; Bland recorded 7.5 sacks and two interceptions, plus a pass breakup and blocked kick.
FSCC career interceptions leader Short picked off five passes and returned them 123 yards; No. 7 also recorded 28 tackles (26 solo, 2 assist), a quarterback sack and six pass breakups during his final year in a Greyhound uniform. Short made No. 7 on the KJCCC’s top 16 players list and Bland was selected No. 10.
Are helped open holes for a 1,000-yard running back, freshman Stanley Hagan and his 1,232 yards and five TDs on 271 carries. The Greyhounds finished with 1,431 rushing yards and eight TDs on 403 carries.
Are, Bland and Short also made the All-Region VI Team.
Redshirt freshman defensive end Demetrius Hill (6-3, 245) and redshirt sophomore linebacker Marceise Jackson (6-3, 240) made second team.
Hill finished with 53 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, six pass breakups, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick. Jackson had 69 tackles (46 solo, 23 assist), 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, three pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Redshirt offensive lineman Chris Mayer (6-7, 345), sophomore fullback Robert Rooks (6-0, 255), sophomore defensive tackle Justin Taimatuia (6-2, 295), redshirt freshman safety Antonio Carter (5-11, 190) and sophomore safety Austin Fulson (5-9, 195) received honorable mention honors.
Fulson recorded 67 tackles (54 solo, 13 assist), 2.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles, Carter 50 tackles (31 solo, 19 assist), one interception, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles, and Taimatuia 34 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and two fumble recoveries.
For the second consecutive year, a 1,000-yard FSCC running back did not make All-Conference, as Hagan failed to make first team, second team or honorable mention with seven running backs chosen better than him. Only Hutchinson running back Terrell Lane outgained Hagan among KJCCC running backs, with his 1,537 yards on 233 carries for the 8-2 Blue Dragons.
Fort Scott finished its season 4-5.
Garden City head coach Jeff Tatum won Coach of the Year, Garden City quarterback Nick Marshall won Offensive Player of the Year and Coffeyville linebacker Martell Spaight took Defensive Player of the Year.
