The Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies met in the 1995 National League Division Series, the first year for MLB wildcard playoff teams. The Braves ousted the Rockies (in only their third season and first playoff appearance as a franchise) in four and would later win the World Series.
On Tuesday night at Wild Red Berry Field in a Frank German League clash, the Comeau Jewelry Rockies beat the Via Christi Braves 14-4 for something very important to 11- and 12-year-old boys — Rockies head coach Brian Sutton bought all nine Rockies a sno-cone after the game, a frosty reward for completing the regular season with a 10-2 record, best in Frank German play.
The Braves jumped ahead with a strong first inning. Cade Chastain led off the clash with a double and worked his way to score on a pair of wild pitches by Rockies starter Jerek Butcher. Cal Marquardt reached on a walk, advanced on those wild pitches and scored on an error. Butcher settled down and the Braves left two runners on base.
The Rockies came back swinging in the bottom of the first — Corbin Jefferson led off with a single, No. 2 hitter Payton Cantrell plated the speedy Jefferson with a single and No. 3 man Zach Sutton blasted a single to left to score Cantrell. Jefferson and Cantrell both stole bases to advance into scoring position. Zach Kunkler would score the final run of the frame and the Rockies led 3-2 until the top of the third.
That’s when Reece Willis and Connor Balthazor hit consecutive RBI singles to stake the Braves to a 4-3 lead.
However, the Rockies answered with four runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth to claim their run-rule victory.
Sutton rocketed a triple leading off the third and promptly scored on a Butcher RBI single. The Rockies scored four runs on five consecutive hits — a triple and four singles in a row — and two costly Braves errors.
Cantrell pulled off a nifty little feat in the fourth, by leading off the frame with a single and ending the game on a walk-off two-run inside-the-park homer. Butcher drove in his second and third runs of the game on a two-run single and Bolinger, Cody Leonard and Ethan Ward hit consecutive RBI singles.
Defensively, Jefferson made a pair of nice running catches in center.
The Rockies end their regular season 10-2, better than any team in Frank German by four wins. The Watco Nationals end their season 6-5-1 and the Braves end theirs 6-6. The postseason begins on Monday.
