Spots are still available for the 8th Annual Summer Golf Classic in Girard, a charity event hosted by the Girard Medical Center Foundation and that benefits the Girard Medical Center.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, July 17, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Crawford Hills Golf Course, formerly known as Girard Municipal Golf Course. The entry fee is $120 per team with an 80 percent payout, and it is a three-man scramble format. If inclement weather hinders play on July 17, the event will be rescheduled for July 24.

Proceeds from this year’s golf classic will go toward the GMC’s transition to digital radiology equipment, which could result in faster treatment times for the patients. Randy Vogts, GMC Foundation president, said he hopes to raise $20,000 from this year’s event.

“We raised over $13,000 last year and we’d like to hit $20,000 this year,” he said. “You have to set your goals high.”

Various sponsorship opportunities are available. A Master Level Sponsorship costs $1,000, a Hole Sponsorship $500, Green Sponsor $250 and Tee Box Sponsor $100. Foundation tax credits are available for Masters Level, Hole and Green sponsors.

Shepherd Team Auto Plaza will offer at Hole-In-One sponsorship, giving someone a chance to win a 2011 Toyota Camry. Evans Motors will also be donating a pre-owned car.

Vogts said 108 golfers participated in 2009, and he expects even more this year.

“It has grown each year,” he said. “We always have nice sponsorships and the donors have really stepped up and helped make this a great event. We’ve had terrific support from the community.”

The GMC Foundation helps raise money to support major GMC projects. Last year, the proceeds from the golf tournament went toward the GMC’s new Frontenac clinic on U.S. 69.
