Even Northeast girls basketball coach Jason Clemensen admitted that it was not the way he wanted to come back from the holiday break.
The Vikings traveled to Jasper, Mo. and fell, 46-22 behind Candice Talbott’s 18 points in the paint.
“It is not at all how we wanted to come back from the break,” Clemensen said.
But, the Viking defense contained Talbott in the first half, allowing her to score just five points before halftime.
“Defensively, we played a pretty good ball game,” Clemensen said. “When you hold a team to 40 points, you should win.”
It was the offensive production for Northeast that was the thorn in their sides.
Northeast had two scorers — Morgan Stokes and Britney Clark — manage just six points each to lead the Vikings.
“We did not take care of ourselves on our offensive end,” Clemensen said. “We have to put the ball in the hole to have a chance at it.”
In the second half, Talbott went off on the offensive side and had 13 of her game-high 18 points.
“We had no post game against her,” Clemensen said.
The Vikings will take the week off before hosting Southeast in a non-league contest at 6 p.m. Friday night.
