Over the course of her three years with the Pittsburg High School volleyball team, senior Kristina Willis has compiled quite an impressive résumé.
It includes:
• 2-time unanimous selection to the All-Southeast Kansas League first-team;
• 3-year letterwinner;
• 650 kills;
• 365 blocks;
• 406 service points;
• selected to The Morning Sun All-County team her senior season;
Now, Willis has decided to take her game to the next level after signing a national letter of intent Tuesday to play volleyball at Pittsburg State next fall.
“It’s my hometown college and it was the only place that I could see myself going,” Willis said.
Willis was kicking around the possibility of going to the Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., but Pitt State head coach Ibraheem Suberu came calling and changed her gameplan.
“A lot of this was because of Coach Ib,” Willis said. “He’s a good coach and I know just what he expects.”
Pittsburg head coach Mary Packard said that Willis has been a sight on the volleyball court in her three years.
“If you’ve ever been to a game or a practice, you know how exciting she is to watch,” Packard said.
Now, Willis and her 4.0 grade point average will go to the Gorillas, where she said she hopes to make a contribution.
“I may not be the strongest hitter for them, but I will be contributing to what they are doing,” Willis said.
As for the rest of the season, Willis hopes to focus on keeping up with her academics.
“Now, I will focus on academics and keeping my grades up,” Willis said.
