It was a little bit of new and some old for Northeast head football coach Phil Hobbs.

Hobbs became accustomed to participating in the annual preseason coach’s poll. But, this year, Hobbs takes part with a new league.

Previously, Hobbs and the Vikings took part in the preseason coach’s poll with the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League. On Thursday, Northeast was picked to finish second in the 11-man portion of the 2010 99.1 FM ESPN Three Rivers League preseason coach’s poll.

“This is a positive step for our kids and for our school,” Hobbs said. “We are very excited about the move.”

The Vikings were picked second, tied with Uniontown as Oswego was tabbed as the league favorite.

For Oswego head coach Andy Fewin, the Indians have a 16-4 record accumlated over the last two years and the return four honorable mention All-State players from last season.

“Our success has come from nothing but hard work,” Fewin said. “the kids have really worked their butts off.”

For the Vikings, Hobbs said that, as they started school Wednesday, they checked out 25 sets of football equipment and had what he called a “successful” summer weights program.

“We had a good turnout in the weight room,” Hobbs said. “What is good is that we are seeing a lot of junior high students coming in to work out and that is exciting for the future.”

And, being new in the league, but not new to the preseason coach’s lunch, Hobbs was unsure that the Three Rivers League would even have a luncheon.

“I was kind of surprised because I didn’t know we were doing it until I found out on Monday,” Hobbs said.

On the 8-man side of the league, the St. Paul Indians were picked to win the league.

Crest High School was picked to finish second, ahead of Marmaton Valley, Pleasanton, Chetopa and Altoona-Midway.

“I don’t know that we are going to finish as the No. 1 team in the conference,” said St. Paul head coach Doug Tuck. “I think teams like Crest are very good, but we do have a lot of depth and we are in a unique situation that way.”
