The Pittsburg Community Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team improved to 9-0 with a 37-16 win Monday over Coffeyville.
PCMS used a balanced Dragon attack — Taylor Muff led with nine points and Jayden Hammond added eight, Logan Lord seven and Caitlyn Burdick seven points. Muff had nine rebounds and three steals, Burdick three assists, three steals and three deflections, Lord three steals and three deflections and Daeshia Turner added seven rebounds.
The PCMS seventh graders continued their skid with a 24-23 loss, despite nine points apiece by Madison Vogel and Kyia McWilliams. McWilliams led with 13 rebounds and Vogel had seven steals.
McKenzie Wilks added seven rebounds and three assists. PCMS committed the majority of its 19 turnovers after halftime and made 1-of-5 free throws down the home stretch.
Pittsburg won the combined B game 14-8 behind six points, two assists and six steals by Turner.
The St. Mary’s Junior High girls won two of three games Monday night in Baxter Springs.
St. Mary’s won the 7A game 23-10. Marci VanBecelaere scored as many points as Baxter on her own and Kelsey Curran added seven points. Kamree Pace had five steals and three assists.
Baxter won the 8A game 35-20 despite Olivia Smith and Emily Paterni combining for 16 points, Smith 10 and Paterni 6.
St. Mary’s won the combined B game 26-12. Allie Evans led the Panthers with eight points and Rebecca Spears added six. Evans and Madison Thomas paced the attack on the glass with five rebounds apiece.
On the boys side, St. Mary’s swept Baxter, winning the seventh grade contest 43-27 and the eighth grade contest 36-26. Jacob Dellasega and Bryce Hutchins scored 10 and nine points respectively in the 7A contest; Zach Hizey and Josh Hayes scored 10 and nine respectively in the 8A contest.
The Girard Middle School girls won two of three Monday against Columbus. Girard won both A games, the 7A game 36-12 and the 8A game 35-18.
Shelby Smith led the Girard seventh grade with a career-high 23 points and Jacey Murphy added six. The eighth graders were again led by Olivia Hanson and her 11 points; Ashley Ray and Kaylea Augustin had eight and seven points, respectively.
Columbus won the combined B game 26-12.
Northeast Junior High continued its winning ways with a 38-14 win in the A contest and a 14-12 win in the B game Monday against Jayhawk-Linn.
Kelsea Choate led the Vikings with 16 points, Haley Robinson added 10 and Autumn Walker scored eight.
In the B game, Amber Claffey led Northeast with six and Alaina Bualle and Liz Toms each scored four points.
