The Pittsburg State women found a little more inside-outside balance offensively and continued its solid defense Saturday in second-day play of the Missouri Southern Thanksgiving Classic against Avila (NAIA).
Let’s start with that defense. Over a 11-minute, 5-second stretch of the second half, Pitt State held Avila scoreless and upped its lead 19 points from 43-33 to 62-33. The Eagles shot 29 percent overall, 20 percent after halftime, and committed 22 turnovers. The Gorillas are surrendering 48 points per game after four early-season games.
Sophomore forward Lizzy Jeronimus paced the balanced Pitt State offensive attack with 16 points, one game after she torched Evangel (NAIA) for 29.
Senior guard Drew Roberts added 15 points and senior post Lauren Brown once again proved highly effective inside, scoring 12 points (6-for-8 shooting), grabbing nine rebounds, swatting away three Avila shots, and making one steal.
Redshirt freshman Cathy Brugman scored a career-high nine points on perfect 3-point shooting (3-3 for No. 34); her only miss came inside 3-point range. True freshman post Kylie Gafford contributed three blocks.
Pitt State (4-0) returns home Wednesday night for a nonconference game with William Jewell.
