The Missouri Western Griffons have progressed from no playoff wins in school history to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in two  short weeks.

No. 9-ranked Western jumped out early on Henderson State, leading 17-7 after one quarter and 31-14 at halftime en route to a 45-21 victory at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia.

The Griffons’ D intercepted Harlon Hill finalist Kevin Rodgers four times Saturday and the Reddies’ signal caller entered the game with eight interceptions thrown in 10 regular season contests.

Western quarterback Travis Partridge passed for 204 yards and two TDs and rushed for another pair of scores despite 10 net rushing yards. Harlon Hill finalist Michael Hill rushed for 122 yards and scored a touchdown. Tyson Crockom led the receivers with six catches for 40 yards and tight end Reggie Jordan scored a pair of TDs on his two receptions.

The Griffons (12-1) travel next Saturday to face its second Northern Sun team from Minnesota, No. 1 seed Minnesota State-Mankato. Western defeated Minnesota-Duluth 57-55 in triple overtime (Nov. 17).

Minnesota State-Mankato 38, Northwest Missouri 35 (2 OT)

MANKATO, Minn. — The Bearcats of Northwest Missouri overcame a 21-0 halftime deficit and 28-14 deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime at 28-all.
Both teams scored TDs in the first overtime: Mankato running back Andy Pfeiffer on a 6-yard scamper and Northwest running back Jordan Simmons on a 25-yard TD pass from Trevor Adams.

Three interceptions plagued Adams in the first half and an interception did Northwest in again during the second overtime. Mankato redshirt freshman defensive back Justin Otto picked Adams off in the end zone and then junior kicker Sam Brockshus sent Northwest home with a 27-yard field goal.
Top seed Mankato (12-0) hosts Missouri Western next Saturday at Blakeslee Stadium. Northwest Missouri ends its season 10-3.

In other NCAA-II playoff games Saturday, West Texas A&M beat Ashland 33-28, IUP defeated New Haven 17-14, Winston-Salem rolled over Shippensburg 37-14, Carson-Newman nipped Lenoir-Rhyne 38-35, Valdosta State handled West Alabama 49-21, and Colorado State-Pueblo beat Indianapolis 28-7.

Shawnee Mission West 19, Hutchinson 14 (Class 6A)

TOPEKA — The Vikings of Shawnee Mission West trailed perennial football powerhouse Hutchinson 14-6 at halftime of the Class 6A title game at Yager Stadium. Shawnee Mission West blanked Hutchinson in the second half and forged ahead on touchdown runs by Anthony Verdini and Andre Maloney, eventually running out the clock on the title hopes of the Salthawks. Shawnee Mission West finishes its season 12-1 and Hutchinson 10-3.

EMPORIA — The Golden Eagles were a dominant force in Class 5A all season: preseason No. 1 and Bishop Carroll outscored its 13 fallen opponents 742-148, averaging 57.1-11.4 per game. The closest game all season for the Golden Eagles was the 5A semifinal win over Salina South, 45-21.

Carroll also rolled over Wichita Heights 47-16, Wichita North 55-0, Wichita South 42-0, Wichita West 59-13, Wichita Northwest 61-14, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 38-6, Goddard Eisenhower 55-0, Goddard 70-13, Liberal 49-12, Hays 52-27 (playoffs) and Andover 49-14 (playoffs).

Holton 21, Eudora 0 (4A)

SALINA — Both teams played smash-mouth football in the first half, a 7-0 lead enjoyed by Holton on a Chase Wilson 9-yard run. The Wildcats scored in the second half on a Jaxon Wright 36-yard run and a Lane Lassiter 35-yard run. Eudora lost its second consecutive 21-0 4A title game, losing by that score last year to Rose Hill. Holton head coach Brooks Barta won his third state title and he combines with his father — recently retired Smith Center head coach Roger Barta — for 11 state championships. Holton ends 14-0.

Scott City 28, Silver Lake 21 (3A)

HUTCHINSON — No. 1-ranked and undefeated Silver Lake took a 21-0 lead with 33 seconds remaining before halftime in the Class 3A title game at Gowans Stadium. Scott City, not content to run out the clock, scored with 5 seconds left on a Trey O’Neil 23-yard reception and Scott City trailed 21-7 at halftime instead of 21-0. The second half was all Scott City, culminated by a Brenner Wells interception and the game-winning 8-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Bret O’Neil to fellow senior tight end Drew Kite with 46 ticks left on the clock. Scott City ends its season 14-0 and Silver Lake finishes 13-1.

Meade 28, Centralia 25 (2-1A)

HAYS — The Buffaloes of Meade have developed a reputation for being one of the best running teams in the state. On Saturday, Meade showcased its passing game in the final 4 minutes, 44 seconds after trailing 25-14. Senior quarterback Chris Hardaway, who entered the game with 17 touchdown passes and only four interceptions, connected with Jett Little on a pair of scores, including the dramatic 23-yard game-winning TD with 36 seconds left. Meade and Centralia have established a trend: Centralia won 2-1A titles in 2009 and 2011, Meade in 2010 and 2012.
